Who? Oh that amazing guitarist that's far more talented than most folks even know? Yeah, he's ok. Money for Nothing does NOT define Mark.

Shangri-La is my favorite as its really complex but he's just freaking effortless man....pass the PVC tube, lock your heels in and turn him on type stuff. Even nerds get Mark Knopfler....thats how deep he is.

i heard a tune the other day by mk..i was in the pool so i couldn't get the title..the writing was so detailed and deep...he was telling a story in 1st, 2nd and 3rd person perspectives...really drew me in...it was about sailing in the old times..it was one of his newer releases...then the guitar came in very poignantly...great song...gotta find it again

Sailing to Philadelphia maybe? I think I know the song; if it's not Saling... I'm pretty certain it's on that album.

I remember when my bother got a set of Monitor 12s and CD players were just getting affordable, maybe 85. He had his speakers seperated 20 feet apart (the seperation and fill of the room was truly awesome) in the living room and we turned on Dire Straits Communique CD (Once upon a time in the west), I thought I was in Audio Nirvana, not only did I love the album, but the combination of hearing the the CD and the Polks, I was just blown away, especially with the drum hitting toms of the song) man I was fan at that point. I was only 12 or so years old. Still can picture looking at those speakers in amazement. Thinking all along I thought I would buy 12 inch tower speakers from Pioneer, Sony or Technics at the time. I couldn't been further wrong. So thinking back that was a great moment of time, the start of DS and Polk.

I wish he would go on tour by himself, I would go again. I got a chance to see him live during Shangri-La and Get Lucky. On the Get Lucky tour I has able to shake is hand. I brought along a couple of DS LPS and sharpie but instead he shook my hand which great as well.

I've been immersing myself in the MK solo stuff for the past few months -- started with the Chet Atkins duet, then the Emmylou Harris duet. Moved on to Sailing To Philadelphia, then Shangri-La, and just kept going -- now I've got 'em all.

Just great, great music. And some new inspiration for an old guitar player...

All of them except for On Every Street are available on SHM-SACD (Japanese). I have them all except Making Movies and it's next.

I would recommend starting with Dire Straits and moving right up through all of them. Communique is perhaps my favorite but I love them all.

The SHM-SACD of "Brothers In Arms" was cancelled. However, the earlier SACD of "Brothers In Arms" is a screaming bargain at about $20.00. "Brothers In Arms" was released in the US as a DualDisc, featuring the DVD-A version of the album on one side of the disc. It's quite a collector's item nowadays.

"Shangri-La" was also available as a SACD, but only as an import in the US.

On a related note, don't overlook Mark Knopfler's work as a movie music composer...."Cal", "Local Hero", "Princess Bride", etc.
