First, there will be no pie charts, graphs or powerpoints...just a little story, read if you wish or bypass it.
Here's how Club Polk has damaged my bank account, in a good way.
The Pre-Polk era.
Early this year, August to be precise, I purchased a PSW108 for my main system, which consisted of some basically crap Soundstage towers powered by a Yamaha HTR-6320 AVR, at the time I thought it was a good set up. Well I go register the sub and then get linked to here...then is all went downhill from there...
Got to reading on here, watts, amps, Hz, cables, SDAs, SRT, LSi/M RTi A, Usher, Pioneer SC, Parasound Emotiva etc. And then finding out my system, needed work. And the spending of cold hard cash. So starts the insanity and in a short period of time I rebuilt the system. The process follows.
First upgrade...HK 3490 stereo receiver...nice power bump, but the towers still didn't sound all that good, they were literally made by JBL for a local store chain, probably using the lower end spectrum drivers in the parts bin. $500 gone.
Part 2, Polk Audio RTi A7 towers, nice upgrade, a little lean on the lower end of the frequency range. Admittedly I knew I needed more jam but couldn't afford it at the time. $700 total dropped.
Part 2.1 Canare Speaker wire replaces lamp cord. Huge improvement in sound quality and imaging. $36
3rd time's a charm. the PSW 108 was overwhelmed so I opted for a Klipsch KSW10, nice powerful downfiring sub. Nicely added the missing thump but alas, the Polks needed that something extra. $200 boomed away.
Part 4 of the mission. tonyb decides to look over a local vintage used audio store's inventory online for another Polkie and mentioned "Dude has a Parasound HCA-1200II...that'll work nicely for your LSi9s". Well that Polkie didn't want the amp so I figured I'd make a rumbling about checking it it. tonyb said in another way "DO IT!". So off I go, It came home and WOWZERS ! What a difference! The stereo is ALIVE! The woofers were moving, the bass was coming from the speakers right in front of me, it sounded great but something was still a little um off...more on that later. $400 frittered away.
A couple of weeks ago I decided to do some screwing around with my A3 bookies, placing them with the A7s and trying to figure out where the hell all the highs went, I knew the Parasound would dampen the brightness but not to this extent, sure as crap, I make a discovery that saddened me. Blown tweeters, A little investigation into the matter I found my better half, pushed the HK beyond reason for a few hours, an honest email to Polk about replacement part prices yielded an early seasonal gift. Polk would cover them on the first occurrence. Waiting on a package now. $0
5 Golden lasers. My DVD/CD Player packs it in xmas day...what a downer, no stores open drats oh well. So I bring home a new Sony DVD Player a few days later, never open it and return it to the store after finding out more. Then just today, the last day of 2013 I make a find that would make any bargain hunter smile, a Marantz CD6004 clearance priced, get it home and hook it up, well this would mark HOLY CRAP moment number 3 in the system rebuild. F1nut made mention of this unit in a prior thread and when I saw it with a special price, the thought process was short and well, I'm happy with it uhm MORE than happy. $270 spun away.
In less than 6 months, you fellow Polkies have caused me slight financial distress but as it sits right now, the system is really nice, sounds absolutely spectacular and I have YOU to thank for that. Solid nods to certain equipment, wire, and most of all, patience. It's honestly appreciated. Some may not say thanks, but I do. With the help and advice of some of you, I have built a system that my ears love. Might not be up to the caliber of some of you but eh...some of us have modest budgets and sometimes push it a little too hard. Also, thank you to Polk Audio, for providing this forum, it's extremely beneficial.
Now for 2014...unless it's a pair of hot rodded SDAs...my major audio purchases are done ! Gotta reign it in once in a while ! Must get out of the rabbit hole...once in a while :)
