A fellow Polkie and new Oppo owner asked if we could set up a thread for Q&A on all things Oppo.
I thought with the new 103/105's coming out there will be many new 83 and 95 owners as well as those of us that upgrade to the new ones.
Please help out with your knowledge on these great players wherever you can.
And ask anything you care to about Oppo operation.

Anyone know why Oppo's are advertised as "region free" on AGon etc sometimes for a few hundred bucks more than normal?
I could play PAL and VOD without any problems on the 95 and yet these models are somehow special.

Here is a question, why, when I select two channel does the unit still show the sw cabinet in the set-up and make me select a crossover freq?

I e-mailed Oppo and they said the crossover does not apply when using the analogue outs. It does apply as I can change it and hear the difference. How do I set it for only (full range) two channel?

As always gear does apply. here is what I have

Dish Network Receiver. HDMI out of the Dish unit to the HDMI in for the Oppo. HDMI out of the Oppo to a Samsung plasma. Oppo handling all of the Video chores. (and DAMN! does it handle those chores well)

Audio is out RCA R & L from the Oppo to my GFP-750 to be played in two channel. Adcom amp to my SDA2A's. Signal Cable IC's and speaker cables

SDA2A's and nothing else. My system has no provision for base cabinets.

I bought the Oppo as it was supposed to be able to combine multi-channel audio. It does and does it well but it clips the bottom. Down mix works as advertised when it comes to movie sound tracks on two channel.

Try it on yours and see if it makes you select 40hz on the crossover.

You are a stronger man than me. Having now owned a good transport/decent DAC I would never let it go without the new one in the house. I thought the Sony 2000ES changer was alright to get by for a while. Light years better than the Sony DVD player I had been using, right?

I have now seen the light.

I do not think this is correct. Mine processes both audio and video from the Dish Network receiver. I have also networked my PC through the cat5 connector for audio.

I cannot speak to the quality of the DAC other than to say the audio is much better from the Oppo.

to SDA1C. I liked the interface but have no past experience to compare it to anything. It would be nice if I could assign the default to HDMI in Back on start-up. I liked that it is simple to use and navigate. That said, it also seemed generic and bland but for the crossover question above it seems to work.

You are 100% correct on that ! The one thing I hate about my 95 is that it's a freaking slug.

I don't think it's that slow, not compared to the kw SACD player, that is slow and it's not even a BDP..

IMO the oppo line is a great bang for the buck player. One can't go wrong with an 83se, 93, 95, 103, 105..

Received my 105, yesterday. Listened to it for a few hours last night and I'm really pleased. I'm running it in stereo w/balanced IC's to an Adcom GFP-750 which is connected via balanced to a Sunfire 300/2 pushing 1.2tl's. First thing I noticed was deeper and more natural bass. Overall, in one word, it's very "smooth". My wife came home from work during the un-boxing and she's not to keen on reference sound levels, so I've had to keep the volume down. More critical listening to come after Thanksgiving.

Other thoughts...I've played 3 CD's and several hours of background music from a Synology DS211 NAS. Setting up wireless was a breeze and I've had a good connection between my router, on the 2nd floor, and the Oppo on the 1st floor. Browsing via DLNA is going to be a pain. I have 1000+ CD's ripped to the server and the folder interface is slow. Paging down to the appropriate artist/band takes a while. Oppo has Media Controller software for the BDP-9X line, but it's not compatible w/the 103 or 105. Their Facebook page says they're working on porting it but don't have a release date. I like the Squeezbox server app but Oppo doesn't have anything like it. Oppo's recommendation is to use a third party app like BubbleUPnP w/Bubble's server. Unfortunately, the Bubble server requires Java loaded to the NAS and what little research I've done, looks like it'll be a bitty to do on the DS211. Doable, but I need more time to figure it out. The Squeezebox server is supported by Synology and was fairly easy to set up when I went to a NAS.

Late last night I connected the HDMI output from my Xfinity DVR to the 105. I ended up w/the same HDMI syncing issues many user's have reported. Watched it for a few minutes and then swapped the cables back to the original config. I'm really interested in using the Oppo in place of my Sunfire TGP-III A/V processor and the Adcom GFP-750. I'd move the 750 to my bedroom rig and sell the TGP-III. This would really simplify my connections and eliminate additional components in the sound chain. More to come on this.

The remote works good but the Android app is most definitely faster. The new beta firmware is reported to improve DLNA browsing, possible sluggish remote commands and some of the syncing problems. I'll hold off on loading the beta release until it's officially released. For those that want to try it...you can fall back to the previous release if it isn't stable.

Show me a player that loads a BluRay fast.. If it doesn't load lightning fast its crappy?? Cambridge BDP is in line with OPPO and doesn't load any faster..

Also are you in that big of a hurry to watch a movie? When it's playing its not like its playing at slow speed.. LOL!!

Remember the days of VHS?? That was crappy!!

J/K... I purchased my 95 back in February of this year. At first it was absolutely fantastic. I had it hooked up via analog cables and the sound was incredible. That was up until I installed the firmware updates OPPO likes to push. The first time I ran the firmware update everything went to hell in a hand basket. The operation (start up, changing chapters etc...) is now at a snails pace and the player often hangs in the middle of a movie (Blu-Ray) and I have to start the movie over (this happens about 3 out of every 10 movies I watch). Not sure if I got a dud or what but I'm definitely not impressed. Spending 1K on a player is a good chunk of change. I guess I expected more for my money. @ brgman - yes I have found a better player (not for SACD) - my cheap ass Sony is what I have hooked up right now - at least I can watch an entire movie without it cutting out on me. I am currently deployed overseas (AF) and the first thing I plan on doing when I get home is to send my player to OPPO to get it checked.

Did you try reinstalling the firmware? If it was working to your satisfaction prior to the update but not after then the update certainly seems suspect. From the reading I have done I do not think yours is a common complaint. Have you talked with Oppo and if so what was their reaction?

I will try reinstalling the firmware when I get home next month - hopefully it will fix the problems because I really do like the 95 when it's working properly.
