I have the 93, upgraded from the 83, and thinking of getting the 103. I only use my Oppos for HT. Anyway, I know this is a stupid question, but I did not see anything in the manual about it. One thing I loved about DVDs, and hate many BRs for not supporting it, is the resume on play feature. This is where the next time you play the movie it resumes from where you stopped. It drives me crazy many BRs do not support this.

Anyway, people say use the bookmark option. Okay, but I cannot figure out how to bookmark a movie, and it is not in the manual. Is this easy on the Oppo?

Has anyone who ordered the 103 tried the analogue outs? I am wondering if the crossover point shows up when doing two channel only?

mine (OPPO-93) does resume when I put a disk on it...hate it everytime I have to hit start from beginning....
love I can use touchpad (or android device) via OPPO app to control the player....since it's WIFI, I don't have to point the remote near the player...you need to have the OPPO on same network....

As I said, some Blurays support resume play from where stopped. Other Blurays do not. For those you need to use the bookmark feature, but there is no documentation for it in the 93's manual.

I will try reinstalling the firmware when I get home next month - hopefully it will fix the problems because I really do like the 95 when it's working properly.

Yeah, something must be amiss. Oppo customer service is excellent. They will help you straighten it out. In the meantime, post #3 in this thread has a link to an extensive FAQ put together by a long time Oppo user and many other contributors. Perhaps it will help.

Not all Blurays support auto-resume. If you turn the player off then they start at the beginning. Others will pick up where the disc stopped. For the Blurays that do not support auto resume the bookmark feature is suppossed to be the solution. But of course, it is not documented.

Yes, that's actually why I quoted it. Thanks for pointing it out so that it's very obvious I don't own any BD's so I can't test the bookmarks for you. I do have a few DVD's but don't typically buy them, only rent.

I'm really interested in using the Oppo in place of my Sunfire TGP-III A/V processor and the Adcom GFP-750. I'd move the 750 to my bedroom rig and sell the TGP-III. This would really simplify my connections and eliminate additional components in the sound chain. More to come on this.

A week+ w/the 105 and I couldn't be happier. I achieved the goal of simplifying my setup (reducing the # of components) and driving my power amp using the 105 as a balanced pre for 2 channel and mixed balanced/unbalanced for HT...with the requirement that the 105 must be at least equal to, or have better SQ as my current setup. If there was any compromise in SQ, the 105 would integrate into the system and not take the place of my Adcom GFP-750, Sunfire TGP-III or Squeezebox Touch. Only my cheap Sony BDP would go. In the unexpected chance the 105 was a heap of junk...it would go back to Oppo (like that was going to happen).

Two channel listening is my 1st priority. Several forums question the ability of the 105 to function as a high quality pre. I love the Adcom GFP-750 but haven't missed it. The 105 pre is capable of driving my 2 channel Sunfire 300/2 and 5 channel Rotel RB-985 to extreme levels with zero distortion. Increasing/decreasing the volume is smoooooth. No clicks or steps from one level to the next and there's enough head room on the 105's scale of 0 to 100 that I've never increased the volume past 80. I'd be kicked out of the house before I'd listen to above 50 for more than brief periods. The only fault I've found is when turning down the volume that final bit, from 1 to 0, the sound abruptly disappears compared to an infinite fade out. Also, I'd like to see a firmware update that provides the ability to set a predefined sound level, say 30, when the system powers on. Currently, it retains the level last used. The sound-stage is wide, highs are clear and overall SQ is very dynamic. Bass is tight, defined and present even at low levels. At reasonably low listening levels I can feel the bass in my couch. There is absolutely no listening fatigue.

So far, all CD's have benefited from the 105. Poorly mastered CD's still sound bad...but better, decent masters sound very good and anything that normally sounds great is fantastic. Ripped FLAC files appear = CD's. SACD's, Pink Floyd DSOTM in particular, and two DVD-A's (Bonnie Raitt, "Road Tested"/Lyle Lovett, "Joshua Judges Ruth") have never sounded better.

For home theater, I've watched a few standard DVDs and the picture quality is very good on a 46" Samsung Plasma TV. Sound quality is on par w/2 channel...exceptional. Haven't done any major calibration other than to physically measure distances from my 5.1 speaker setup to listening position and plug the numbers into the setup screen. The only setup I haven't done is connect my Epik Empire subwoofer. The TGP-III was configured via a balanced IC and, unfortunately, the 105 sub output is only unbalanced. The sub requires approx 26' of cable to make a tidy run along the room's baseboard, so I had to order a new cable. So far the only negative is a slight sync issue watching TV/DVD, but it's a known problem and Oppo is working on a firmware fix.

Wifi is flawless. My Squeezebox Touch occasionally stalled when the microwave was in use, but the Oppo hasn't faltered. Browsing a huge library of music on a NAS via DLNA or standard file structure is clunky compared to the Squeezebox Server, with DLNA being the slowest method. Hopefully, Oppo will release the 103/105 ported version of their Media Control app soon. Home videos stream with no problem and photos are easy to view. Haven't had Netflix since I moved several months ago, so haven't tried it (or Vudu/Film Fresh), but the free Pandora, Youtube and Picasa apps are very fast and sound/look great.

As an added bonus, I've significantly decreased the cable clutter behind my entertainment center and the following components have been reassigned duties improving the bedroom rig:

- Adcom GFP-750 Pre (replaced a NAD C-162...will keep as backup)
- Squeezebox Touch
- Sony BDP-BX37 (replaced a 10 yr old Panasonic CD/DVD player)

Plus...

- Retired: Sunfire Theater Grand Processer III (likely FS in the near future)

In conclusion, the BDP-105 is a positive move in #1-SQ and #2-functionality...for my particular situation. Assuming I was starting over and needed each...a quality 2 channel/HT pre, CD/DVD/BD player and digital media player, I'd say the BDP-105 is reasonably priced @ $1199. I'm not saying it's the end all product, but considering you'd need to purchase 3 separate components, divide that by the $1199, it works out to $399.66 per component. Many of us have easily paid that much for quality gear. Adjust the numbers up or down to compensate for a particular component you believe warrants more or less money. Perhaps a good pre is worth more and a BDP is worth less. Plus, you get the added benefit of porting almost any digital source to high quality DAC's and a video processor. Still too pricey, perhaps the 103 fits the bill. Not trying to throw this out to debate, but I believe good points for anyone considering this purchase towards a quality component based system. YMMV

I think the 105 looks great for those wanting just a straight 2 channel setup using it as a pre. Really allows you to cut down on gear. For those whose setup does more than just video playback (like TV, Xbox 360, etc) it wouldnt work as well if they have more than 1 additional source. Correct me if I am wrong here.

I haven't played video games since........Mario Brother's To watch TV through the Oppo you must have HDMI in...perhaps an HDMI splitter or video games connected directly to the TV w/sound over fiber to the Oppo. But, then convenience starts to become a factor. My statement that it's not the "end all" definitely applies in these situations. Thanks for bringing this up...don't want anyone buying a player based on an incorrect assumption.

I agree. The Oppo does have a HDMI in as well as USB and SPDIF, so if one wanted to use it as their pre entirely its possible depending upon the sources they use and what format they wanted sound in.

Obviously if you have a 7.1 setup and your sending the signal via Optical or Coaxial into the Oppo your not going to get 7.1 out of it, but considering most other sources (DVR Box, Xbox 360) are still limited to 5.1 you could connect your video to your TV directly via HDMI and use the coaxial and spdif input to send the audio to the Oppo. It would still require additional cables and a TV with enough inputs for each video source, but its possible.

Yes. I'm using variable XLR directly to my amp and control it with either the Oppo or a Logitech remote. With headphones plugged in the outputs are internally disconnected.

You don't need anything special to take advantage of those tracks, as they're just altering the matrixing so Neo X knows where to steer the sound. From what I can tell, Neo X basically steers in a similar way to DPL-IIz for height and DSX for width... and from personal experience, Expendables 2 did seem to have some intentional height cues that came through on both DPL-IIz and DSX, so it isn't even specific to Neo X. Audio mixers have been steering information that way as a standard for years anyway, so this whole "optimized for Neo X" thing is largely just marketing. The mixer still does the same things he would for a normal theatrical mix (i.e. width channels are basically done by comparison of mains and surrounds and height in the theater is done by mixing the surrounds out of phase, which is how Neo X/DPL-IIz/DSX know to steer that sound above you).

I ordered my 105 from Oppo. They don't double box but did a very good job designing the box/protective inserts. The box is very heavy duty cardboard and should do fine for all but extreme abuse. Take a look at my un-boxing photos on page 1 of this thread:

I ordered both my BDP-83 and BDP-93 direct from Oppo. Their box and packing is not only very functional, but when you open it up and see the player packed in the black Oppo tote bag, you just FEEL like you got something special. No worries on that thing surviving shipping.

In other words, could the USB input be used to play all PC sounds and not just access files? This way I could control the song selection etc...on the PC rather than trying to access folder via the Oppo interface.

I have a couple questions about the 105.

No Audyssey or room correction on-board. I'm using it as a preamp and yes, you can adjust each channel. From the 105 manual:

"The following speaker parameters can be configured:
1. Size: The following speaker size parameters control bass filtering for the speakers.
x Large ? All audio content is passed to the appropriate speaker.
x Small ? All audio content, except for bass frequencies, is passed to the appropriate speaker.
The purpose is to reduce possible distortion. If a subwoofer is available, bass frequencies are redirected
to the subwoofer, otherwise, they are discarded. The bass frequency upper limit is set
by the Crossover Frequency selection in the Setup Menu (see page 73 for details).
x Off ? Speaker for the corresponding position does not exist. Audio for the missing speaker is
redirected to other speakers or discarded if redirection is not possible.
x On (for Subwoofer only) ? Specifies that a subwoofer is available.
NOTE
The Size for Front, Surround and Surround Back speakers is configured in pairs. Changes to
the size of one speaker will automatically change the other of the pair.

2. Distance: The speaker distance parameters set delay control for the corresponding audio channel.
The delay is to compensate for the audio propagation time difference caused by the placement of
speakers.

3. Trim: The speaker trim level parameters sets the volume of each individual channel. Channel trim
is generally not required since most A/V receivers have the capability to adjust channel trim and
compensate for speaker sensitivity differences. However, if your receiver does not have such
functions (many receivers do not support channel trim for their multi-channel analog inputs), you may
adjust channel trim through the player. For most accurate results, it is recommended that you use
test tones from a calibration disc, such as Digital Video Essentials HD Basics, and a SPL (Sound
Pressure Level) meter. The trim level can be set to +/- 10dB in 0.5dB increments."

I use a NAS and DLNA. Not sure if you can direct all PC output, but I'd say it sounds reasonable. I haven't read up on USB but here's a link to the manual;

I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it. I hadn't really contemplated an Oppo until recently. The timing was perfect because I was looking for another Squeeze Box Touch (didn't want to pay the crazy used prices) and needed a wireless Netflix capable BDP. The 105's not cheap in comparison to the SBT, but I haven't regretted one minute of it. It really is a stellar player in so many ways. SQ is exceptional, which was my primary requirement, and the video processing is 1st rate, too. The 103 and 105 use the same video processor, so you're in for a treat.

Please post your impressions after the 103 arrives.
