Default Audyssey Do you use it?

I would like to here what you folks think about Audyssey. I personally think its useful to setup levels and distance but I think the auto eq makes my movie dialog sound like its coming out of a big metal can. So I leave it off.

I use it everytime I change out speakers or change the room. I reset the subwoofer afterwards.

I use it and its gotten MUCH better since 2EQ which is what I think your model has (which my Integra DTR 5.9 also has). I have no problems with dialog at all in how things sound when I was using it with either my Monitor 60's + CS2 + Monitor 40 setup or my current LSi 15 + LSiC + LSi f/x setup.

Its also totally dependent on how your room is setup as well as if you run it correctly and your gear. Might post some pics of your setup and or how you ran it. Maybe it can be an easy fix. It can be pretty finicky in how you run it and how it responds to things (like other loud noises, reflections/height, ect).

I have MultEQ and I rerun it with any speaker changes, including placement. The only changes I make afterward are level changes, mainly to reduce rear channel volume. Overall, it does a great job of EQ'ing my system for movies.

My Onkyo is set to use Audessey all the time and I sometimes increase center level depending upon what is on but overall works great.

I certainly use it. I have MultiEQ XT32 and it works wonderfully. I only tweak some of the volumes and raise a couple of the bass crossover settings.

I had the 705 that you have and used it on that. I currently have the TX-NR1007 and still use Audyssey. If you want some detailed info on properly using Audyssey with the 705, hit AVSForum's 705 owner's thread. There's a detailed FAQ HERE with a section on Audyssey that I wrote up detailing the guidelines for a proper runthrough of Audyssey. First and foremost, USE A TRIPOD. If you aren't using a tripod or a boom mic stand to place the setup mic, you're already setting it up to fail miserably.

Wow, nice read. I did use a tripod, however my furnace was probably running at the same time and I was lazy and only used 3 locations. I will try again thank you very much for that link.

I didn't find Audyssey impressive with the 706 or 707 either.

That right there is your problem. Follow the directions right and it should sound better. You might need to run your center hotter.

You are supposed to turn off everything that can make noise, including fans, AC, dogs, ect.

It seems to be important when running Audyssey to run as many microphone locations as possible. Also, I follow their recommended microphone placement guide to the letter.

I've never tried it but am tempted to, I just need to snag a denon dm-a409 mic. Does anyone know if the setup should be run with Polk SDA IC plugged in or unplugged?

It should be run with your equipment in the exact configuration that you will be using. So, if you will use the system with the IC plugged in, then run Audyssey that way.

hehehehe, give em a bone, make the wife take em on a walk, kick em really hard (kidding on this one). In my case I just put a bunch of peanut butter in their Kong balls and put em in their cage. They are happy as can be to just sit there and get every last drop of PB out of it.

I have older AVRs so I don't use it much. I rely on an SPL meter and my ears. I can't imagine that someone who is a conductor (I am NOT) would not be able to fine tune a surround system using just his ears and match or outdo the "best" Audyssey system? But not many of us have that kind of spatial hearing. So don't stop running those systems, just yet!

I use it on upper end units, just calibrate on lower end(608 for example). The full feature suite is ok, not really better than a upper end unit with no Audyssey. The lower end version I just pass on.
