I just picked up a refurb 42" Panasonic Plasma X5 series this weekend for the BR for $279.

For night time viewing it is great. Would not use in well lit room, to reflective and not bright enough.

Picked mine up at Micro Center.

Really bad news... Panasonic has shut down their plasma factory in China... An announcement is forthcoming in March. They may completely discontinue plasma. Consumers are unfortunately not buying plasmas because the newer LEDs are thinner and less power hungry.

From what Ive read they are closing a plasma specific plant but not ceasing plasma production outright.

They are not totally out of the Plasma game. They just closed the only dedicated plasma making plant. I am sure they will keep making them at their other plants, but it doesnt make sense to keep up a dedicated plant if the sales aren't there.

    See below articles

    http://www.hometheaterequipment.com/...nt-china-3551/

Panasonic has announced that it is in the process of closing its Plasma assembly plant in Shanghai, China. This particular plant is the company's only facility that is totally dedicated, to the production of Plasma displays.

Panasonic has been in the news quite a bit over the past year, but not always with new product announcements. The company has posted financial loses in three of the past four quarters, and is desperately looking to increase their profitability. With the display market being dominated by LCD-based products, the demand for Plasma displays is shrinking. While many feel that Plasma is capable of producing a superior image, Plasma displays are more expensive to build, and thus less profitable to sell.

While this is sad news for fans of Plasma technology, a company spokesman says this closing is not the end. Panasonic has invested billions into R&D for Plasma and will continue to produce them in another plant in China and their main production facility in Japan. This may however, lead to increased prices on Plasma displays in the future
    http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php...&id=1320237339

Panasonic is planning to stop production at two of its TV factories in Japan; one LCD-TV plant and one plasma-TV plant. Panasonic also lowers their TV sales forecast but will continue to produce TVs.

Panasonic stops production at 2 TV plants
Panasonic is experiencing lower-than-expected sales of TVs and are losing money on their TV division. Therefore they plan to close two TV factories in Japan.

    Amagasaki plasma plant
Panasonic plans to close the Amagasaki plasma plant to the left

One of the factories is currently producing plasma TV panels and the other one is producing LCD-TV panels. In the coming years Panasonic plans to increase LCD capacity for small-to-medium size LCD panels and decrease LCD-TV panel capacity. Instead Panasonic plans to source LCD-TV panels from outside suppliers, instead of building their own.

Like most TV manufacturers, Panasonic is experiencing lower demand for TVs than forecasted. Therefore Panasonic has lowered their TV sales forecast from 25 million TVs to 19 million for this financial year, as Panasonic sees 5.5 billion USD in annual losses.

At IFA 2011 Panasonic told us that we can expect larger LCD/LED models in the 2012 line-up but it seems that Panasonic plans to use another manufacturer’s LCD-TV panels.

My ST50 was built in Mexico. The recent introduction of the new line at CES would seem to indicate they will still be behind the technology at least for the near future.

While many feel that Plasma is capable of producing a superior image
Not just capable, plasma TV's are flat out superior. Problem is the average consumer is too blind to see past the price tag of the cheaper LCD's.

Heres my 2 cents. If you can find one, I'd get a Pioneer Elite 60". Best plasma ever made, bar-none. I found a 50" a few years ago on clearance for $1100!

You see fewer and fewer plasma's on the market anymore. I am extremely happy that you all talked me into getting a plasma. Best decision I've made lately.

I just watched "The Avengers" last night on my Plasma and I had forgotten just how good my TV can look. It was like being at the theater without all the cons like not being able to pause, or have room for my lanky long legs lol....

Congratulations!! Love the plasma and the glare is not as bad as other Plasma's I've seen(Samsung).

I'm actually using a stand that came off my old Samsung LCD that I have mounted in the living room. It came in really handy and I like the way it looks.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but can someone link me a "great" Panasonic Plasma (3D) 60" TV? It doesn't need to have the SMART features as I plan on getting an OPPO-103. Don't need the finest technology, but something that is reliable and GREAT picture quality.

Looking for something under $1,700? (Not sure if that's doable)
