Default Rotel RSP-1068 No output from Front Right channel

So, fellow Polkies...a friend of mine has a Rotel RSP-1068 surround pre-amp.

It has stopped outputting a signal from the right front output. All other outputs work fine.
Rotel wants $150 up front to diagnose and possibly repair (the $150 includes 2 hours of "work").
Plus shipping to and from Rotel.

To me, that seems like the best bet but he wants to see if there is a cheaper way of getting it fixed. (He only paid $100 at a garage sale for it and $150 for the 5 channel Rotel amp so he doesn't want to break the bank to repair it.)

Any previous experiences with the RSP-1068?

Since your friend doesn't know what he's doing (if he did, he would have fixed it already) his best bet is to send it to Rotel. Their customer service/repair folks are very good with a fast turn around time.

Your friend could just keep an eye on Ebay and buy another one for under $250, or pick something from B&K in the same age range. Basic older home theater preamps are pretty cheap and in my opinion not worth sending out for repair, since there's no quarantee it can be fixed.

The RSP-1068 was a pretty nice piece though. Nice and clean sounding.

Shipping that is also going to eat some coin back and forth. Check the fuses first. Then see if you have any local repair shops that may be cheaper and you can save some by not having to ship it.

I may take a crack at it myself.

I have repaired car audio amps, computer motherboards, car head units and various other electronics in my day. And I found the Rotel service manual online.
Only problem is, I have no idea what the *expected* output should be. I guess I could connect it to a source and measure the output of the left channel and measure along the ouput circuit to find out what it should be at.

He has been hesitant to replace it because he likes it so much. I may take a look at it and see if I can repair it before he decides what to do.
I will post up my findings.

Repairing amps and preamps is like apples and oranges. Preamps are *very* precise and finicky to work on. One bad solder joint or poorly laid out wire, and it will be humming for the rest of its life.

Very true. So are computer motherboards and I have replaced capacitors and even PCI-E connectors before.

His whole concern is keeping costs low. And I am not going to try and repair something that I feel would be over my head. I would recommend sending it to Rotel if it is something beyond my abilities.

No repairs needed. Apparently, a "hard" reset fixed the issue. It has been playing various sources for 4.5 hours straight now without even a hiccup in the right channel.
