Yamaha receiver shuts off

I just add 2, 265 ls to my system to replace older tower speakers. Now my receiver shuts down and tells me to ckeck speaker wires. This happens at about- 10 db. With old speakers I could go higher without distortion and not shut down. Have checked wires. Are these speakers just drawimg more?

sounds like you have a short, i bumped mine on when i was setting it up and the speaker wires touched an it did the same thing

For some reason your AVR is going into protection mode. I would start by turning AVR on, and trying a pair of headphones. Go passed the setting where it usually happens, and if goes into protection mode, AVR is definately problem. If keeps working, use 1 speaker, and same connection in each individual speaker out, and try to get it passed setting, adjust volumn slowly.
Continue with each individual speaker, even if one causes to go into protection mode, and use same connector.
You need to isolate the problem to AVR, speakers, or wire run.

90% of the time its the wires. Check for any strays around the speaker terminals on both the AVR and the speakers

What Yamaha receiver do you have?

Some the Yamaha AVRs have volume limiter settings. If it isn't the wires, then you may want to check if the "MAX VOL" setting is limiting how high you can go.

Yamahas do have this issue..I have first hand experience with few of their receivers..They do heat up fairly quickly and then shut off as the OP experienced. I had a fan plugged in sitting on top when i had the volume cranked to dissipate the heat and it does help fair bit.

What gauge are you running? Sounds like too much resistance between your source and speaks. Is the load value between the old and new the same?

I don't think that's how that feature works. I think it just caps how high the volume can be set.

Really sounds like a short to me. I caused a short in one of my surround wires once and it took me a long time to isolate the problem. Everything played fine until I hit a certain volume with certain source material... Unplugged one speaker at a time until I could turn it up without everything shutting down, ran a new wire, and everything was fine.

I will now start disconnecting speakers to recheck wires. I added a new 255c-Ls 2 weeks ago and did not have this problem. The new 265-ls' just came in so I add them and now this problem with shut down. I have 4 TC 65i for surround. The AVR is a RX V2600. My subs are run off the pre out so they should not be a problem. With old speakers,which are off lower quality I was able to go too a substantially higher volume before going into protection mode. I redid all connections at AVR already. I'll let you know what I find.

Yes, as said before Yamahas need a lot of breathing room.I know this because when my RX-V665 was pushed a bit it would go into protection mode and be very hot also.I moved out of an enclosed rack and viola it never clipped again it was just overheating. Fans
also work well but you should still keep it high on an open rack or stack.Also if not already done go for bananas as your connecting
devices because they make for a cleaner connection ,way easier to change around for problem solving.

Finally got around to trouble shoot and started pulling wire off back off AVR. First wire removed (right front) solved problem. Now wire or speaker. Changed wire problem still there. Switched right speaker to left no problem. Not new speaker phew! Changed both speaker wires over to B connectors and no clipping or protection mode. Rocked the house for 15 minutes to verify problem solved.
Will have to remove AVR cover tomorrow to see if dirt or debris got into the connectors on the inside.een building a new H/T and may have sucked in some crap. Thanks again for the input. Time to crank up the music and stay warm. Bit cold up here in the NE.
