Anyone hear what I hear, resonating

I'm curious to know if anyone else can hear some resonating in their SDA SRS's?
The resonating is produced by frequencies generated by electric guitar.
One of my theories is that the back panel of the speaker is resonating from these certain frequencies.
The other theory is that the resonating is being produced by the mid drivers themselves.
My Onkyo amps aren?t real stout when driving the SRS's at moderate to high levels.
Is it possible that when the amps get taxed they are producing unwanted frequencies into the mid drivers?
Has anyone used sound deadening material on the inside back panel of the speaker cabinet, or installed a cross brace?

Hello, Tegucigalpa. Have the drivers been tightened lately or have the screws possibly stripped out the substrate to the point to where they just spin when you tighten them? Welcome to the forum, BTW.

Yes, I have checked ALL of the screws, they are as tight as they can get before stripping out the holes.

Yes, the SDA SRS cabinets resonate. Polk made improvements to the later models to help that issue.

One of the mods that may help, is easy and not expensive is to install Blackhole 5 damping sheets in 4" strips at strategic locations. This will absorb some of the backwave from the speaker cones, and clean up the mid range.

Ah, so this is a known issue.
My wife is claiming I'm slighty on the crazy side.
We listen to music together all the time and I'll say, "you hear that, what the hell is that"?
I'll make sure she sees this post.

I am not sure if it is common or not but when I first got my SRS I didn't give them time to resonate as I found some slight oxidation in the SDA circuit and pulled the speakers down so as to be sure there was no more oxidation internally. There was not but what I found was a lot of loose braces and joints where there was little to no glue in the joints or between the braces and the panels. I re-glued and resealed the cabinets and have had no problems with resonance at all. however, if I had left what I found , I am certain there would have been major resonances and vibrations. Though I can't say it isn't readily audible, I get more panel vibration from my 1.2TL's than from my SRS's. This does not necessarily translate to an audible resonance ( as already mentioned) and I believe it is due to the lack of internal bracing of the 1.2TL's as compared to the SRS's.

I would recommend checking the cabinets joints and bracing to see if you have what i did. If so it's not too bad to fix, just time consuming.

Applied Dynamat Extreme, No Rez and Armaflex this past weekend to my 2.3's. For less than a $100 in materials the results are amazing! My results pretty much mirror Druminman's. Thanks Druminman for your detailed how to. Now to get the crossovers upgraded.

I haven't tried No rez yet but the seals and dynamat have made a big difference on all speaker i have used them on. i assume that this took care of the problematic sound you were hearing before?

Yes it did. Like the op said about the electric guitars - I always assumed it was my room setup. However I had to rearrange recently and got rid of a good bit of the resonation I was hearing. But after coming across this thread It seemed like a logical cause for what I was hearing. Using the Dynamat, Armaflex and No Rez tightened up the mid's and low range and brought everything into focus. I also sealed joints and braces as well. The soundstage is deeper and more defined. While the bass and low mid's were good before they have much more impact and realism now. Hearing drums, upright bass and electric bass now is mind boggling! Some Electric guitar before I found to be muddy and fatiguing so I pretty much avoided playing that type of music. Now it sounds good as well at moderate listening levels. Have not had a chance to test at higher volumes yet to see if the resonation is cured here as well.

Where did you apply the Dynamat and No Rez? I presume the Armaflex was used for gasketing?

If you feel the cabinet walls are what's resonating, wooden dowels can also be used as additional bracing and they won't eat up much volume.
