Default If you have ever bought a CD from Amazon....

This is a bit old, but still pretty cool. One more reason to keep buying Cd's since you can still get the MP3's to hold you over till your Cd arrives so you can convert it to FLAC....

I have checked this out and it does indeed work....

One of the important parts is in red.....

Amazon to Provide CD Buyers With Cloud-Based MP3s For Free

CNET is reporting that Amazon is planning to launch a reward scheme for CD buyers. When they purchase music in its physical form, they'll also receive a digital copy, which they'll be able to listen to via Amazon's cloud music service.

Update: The service is now live! See below for more details

Codenamed "Auto Rip", the service will automatically deposit the audio tracks into the customer's Amazon cloud account upon purchase. Then, they'll be able to listen to them via whatever device they choose. CNET also suggests that Amazon may roll out the service retrospectively, providing MP3s of past CD purchase, too.

That second—and most speculative—part of the story is the most interesting. While CDs may be dead to some people by now, chances are most of us have purchased a reasonable amount of music on physical media from Amazon in the past. Logging in to an Amazon account which is filled with all that music would be a somewhat of a boon.

The service echoes UltraViolet, a Hollywood version for DVDs which supplies customers with both physical and digital copies of a movie. Given that CDs are far, far easier to rip than DVDs, though, this wouldn't so much seem a matter of making consumers' lives easier—instead, it sounds like more of an attempt to convince people that the digital option is superior to the physical. Still, that's no bad thing. [CNET]

Update: Amazon has now rolled out the service. You don't need to activate the service; instead, just log in to Cloud Player and you should see a notification that Auto Rip is up and running. Your past CD purchases should be populated there for you to listen to without you having to lift a finger. Sweet!

I didnt, I just went to the dropdown list under "My Account" on the Amazon homepage and clicked on "Cloud Player". From there I went to my library and if you click in the box next to a song there is a "Download" button which I am assuming lets you download the song to your computer....

I've bought most of my CD's from Amazon in the last few years since signing up for Amazon Prime. They have a record of every CD purchased from them on my account, and yes they did place all that are available as MP3's in my Amazon cloud player account. Not all CD's are available for this service, but a lot of the ones I bought are. I've used it on my phone, but I also make heavy use of the Google Play service that lets anyone with an account there load up to 20,000 songs on their servers for free. I'm at 19,000 uploaded from my computer on Google Play, so it is better for me. My CD's are stored in FLAC on my computer, and I think they get converted to MP3 on Google Play.

Yes, I do. Amazon doesn't sell you those used CDs, so they can't exactly provide you with MP3 copies of them...

havent tested it out besides getting my old cd purchases put into mine. Hoping to buy a couple CD's here next week and will find out how it all works then.

Regardless its nice they are giving them to you for free since they dont have to do and could just make you wait for the CD.

This way you can at least load em onto a low-fi player to hold you over till your CD comes in....

Just checked mine on my phone, and it shows 155 albums in the Amazon player. All put there for free based on prior purchases.

Sweet deal since I bought so many myself.I would assume this is a good way to get folks to pay for more room on the cloud?
Don't you get a couple gb's free then pay for additional?

You get 5 GB free with Amazon Cloud Drive. That's a lot of room for 256Kbps mp3s (600-700 songs).

    Default Amazon

What the "cloud player" gets ya seems to be about an mp3 bitrate of about 250. And apparently it's some kind of variable bitrate where "simpler" portions of the music are encoded at lesser bitrates while more "complex" portions are encoded at greater bitrates. In any event, I tried this and just ended up ripping the physical CD music to FLAC. The "variable" bitrate versions just didn't sound that good. And if these tired old ears can hear a difference I'm sure you guys could too.

This is the warning shot across the bow. They are getting us used to them "clouding" your purchases.
Then the next step is to drop hard media, after that, the downloads. Truly owning physical copies
is NOT what the music and distribution businesses want. Next step, outlaw all copies by
    consumers.
