FWIW (and not that anyone asked!) I find almost all of Diana Krall's recorded output to be quite vapid, and, while she's a good pianist, I think she's a terribly mannered and ineffective vocalist. She projects, to me, a spoiled brat persona that I just cannot get around. I tend to think of Martha Stewart whenever I see or hear her.

Although I'm a Diana Krall fan I know what you mean. Her voice is not technically great, but to me her phrasing is interesting. She also has a great small group.

Did you know Diana is married to Elvis Costello?

I'm really diggin Patricia Barber, especially "Mythologies". Lots of quiet, patient space for the artistry to come through. Weird-wild-poetic lyrics, lovely keys, and excellent production.

I also learned something last night because of this thread. I don't know why, but I never realized what a skillful artist Clifford Brown was. His solo on Joy Spring from the Brown-Roach album below is mind-blowingly brilliant. Now looking for the Complete EmArcy on vinyl.
