favorite amp/preamp combo in 3k-4k range?

If you had 3k-4k to spend on a 5-7 channel home theater amp/preamp combo setup that had to drive 4 ohm front speakers, what would your choices be?

I'd have to go with my current setup. Anthem AVM-20 preamp and Outlaw 7100 amp.

i have the sunfire theater grand III and adcom it was a little over 4k after haggleing.

i was also looking at the anthem 20 v2 that is also a great unit. eateher of these will be fine.

Parasound Halo series sounds and looks good to me. No need to follow trends if at all possible :)

The aforementioned manufacturers are also squared away.

New B&K Ref 50 ~$2200

Used Sunfire Signature Cinema Grand (5 x 400 wpc into 8-ohms) ~$1800 on ebay (Hey, it's < $1 per watt)

Not that I'm an audiophile, but I'd say the Pre-Pro. Because to be current, to have state-of-the-art performance, it virtually requires the purchase of new stock. At least this was true when I moved into HT a year ago. Could well be less true today.

you get the most benefit with the good pre to a very good amp. your pre has more in what the sound is vs the amp. if you get a cheap amp it might color the music a bit but far less than a cheap pre.


here is my 3 recevers sence i got into ht.
a very old sony 10 years old and spent 300 on it. 10 years ago when it was new. everything just sounds mudy on it.


onkyo 787 huge step up. dd 7.1 and alot of other also added a 7 channel amp to it but it olny helped a bit.


now sunfire theater grandIII wow. the dynamics and sq have gone way up compared to the onkyo and the suround sounds fuller and more surounding.


all i have to say is technology moves fast. i do not plan on upgradeing my pre for a long long time even if a new format comes out. but i am planing on adding the front efects to my setup.
