    Default Polk Newby

Hey guys, just found this site while looking for speakers. I've seen many different kinds and combinations when it comes to surround sound systems. Planning on setting up my basement thats in the process of being renovated so I figured this would be the time to install it. Got my eye set on a Denon 1913 but cant figure out where to go from there. I want to use it for both theatre and playing music. In walls was my first choice but now not sure. Anyone out there got some good ideas and and combinations that would work well with this Denon. Thanks .

    Welcome Jack.

Given that receiver, I would suggest all 8 ohm speakers in a bookshelf style and a good subwoofer. You can put the fronts on stands if need be and the surrounds can be too or on the wall. We don't know the size of this room or your budget for the rest of the speakers which is why I can't be too specific without that info because choices will be many and all over the map. Which receiver you chose will determine the limits of power available thus also the limits of speaker choices. Stick with a bookshelf style in 8 ohms from pretty much any manufacturer and you should be fine with that receiver.

I would suggest you head over to your nearest bestbuy and get an ear on different brands. Ask them to hook up a few different ones to at least get an idea of your personal preferences in sound. Of course we are partial to Polk speakers but other brands to look at is Kef, Klipsch, Paridigm, Definitive Technology, all of which your local Bestbuy should carry.

Subwoofers are another story and highly dependent on budget. Brands for the best bang for your buck is Polks micro pro series, SVS,HSU, Epik...all offer some good quality subs for your dollar and will sound good on either movies or music.

Welcome, gentleman jack! I cannot help you as I do not know much about surround sound systems. However, this site is full of lots of wonderful and very knowledgeable people willing to share their knowledge so you have found the right place and I am sure there will be many forum members who will be able to answer your questions and offer you advice.

Probably because that AVR doesn't have much beef to it.

Thanks for replying guys. My basement is 13x 20 and I've a budget of $1000 to $1500, hoping to get some great deals. I'm open for ideas on the receiver as well as the speakers and where to buy them.

Check if polk still sells refurbs on ebay. I got a great set this way little over two year ago (RTI A5, CSi3, FXi A4) for essentially 50% of the retail.
