Crossover help

I ran audyssey on my new setup and it recommended crossovers at 40hz for everything across the board. I know that is way too low - anyone have recommendations?

It just determined that your other speakers can go a little below 40 Hz comfortably. You can go to the speaker set up screen,and set the cross over higher, if you want to. Most will usually run them at 80. You can set you speakers at a higher freq after Audysey set them, but never lower.

80 Hz is the setting most folks use.

80hz is the standard and even if your speakers can play lower. It'll clean up the sound and take a load off your amplifier, so it's not trying to handle notes the sub can do a better job of reproducing.

Would it make sense to set the center channel higher since its mainly dialogue?

I personally think it's better to set all cross overs equally. Many will disagree wit that. The freq that you select isn't a hard cutoff point, but the beginning of a slope.

For instance if you select 80 hz as your cross over point, that is the point where the AVR starts sending the signal to the sub. The other speakers will also receive the signal. All of your speakers may receive that signal, but to a lesser degree.

Just numbers here, but an example. Cross over set to 80, sub will only receive signals at or below 55 hz, but at 60 hz other speakers receive 30 percent of normal signal strength.

it calibrated my surround crossover at 250hz...is this normal?...my center is at 60 and my sub at 150...then it says mains are full range?...whaaa?

Don't know what you have, but rerun cal program. Sometime there is a glitch, or some other sound the mic picked up. Check your wiring, and the jumper on the back of those speakers, if it has one.

As far as the auto calibration goes, the mic needs to be in your listening position at ear level. Also the house needs to be dead quiet as any other noises going on will throw the whole thing out of whack.

Try setting speakers to small and crossover at 80 for a good starting point if you don't want to fly with what it is at now.

80-120hz is good for the surrounds. You could do 60-80hz for your mains and I would go 80hz for your center. Or as others suggested keep it simple and go 80hz all the way around. I have my mains at 60hz and everything else at 80hz.
