The one we had didn't live up to the hype. I think Dyson uses the same advertising firm that Bose uses!!!!

Well, we bought one. Vacuumed the living room with the old one, then plugged in the dyson. By the time I'd done about 10 sq ft, the container was full. So yeah, I like them. The only problem I've had with it is that you have to clean the filters fairly often or the beater brush stops rotating. If you consider something like that a problem, that is.

Just purchased a vacuum last year. Did tons of research (like I always do) before purchasing. Eventually went with a Eureka Pet Lover Plus model, which cost significantly less than any Dyson. I got an even better deal on it because I happened to snag one from woot.com. The general impression I got from reviews (mostly video reviews on YouTube from people that actually owned Dysons) was that Dyson was either average or slightly below average--but definitely not worth the extra premium you pay for the Dyson name. Of course compared to your vacuum you've had for the last 20 years it's going to outperform it, but compared to the modern competition, not that great. This video pretty much summarizes my overall impression:

Ah yeah... no experience with the lower-end Dysons, but my DC-28 replaced a 2 yr old Eureka, and that's what I was comparing it to. One other point I'll give Dyson is that the first time we had the problem with the filters getting clogged, we called Dyson support, mostly expecting to be given the name of a local Dyson repair shop. After explaining the issue and how to clean the filters, they called back 2 days later to make sure the problem was resolved. First time I've had any appliance company follow up to make sure the problem was fixed.

I bought my wife one of those stick rechargeable models, she drives me nuts with the thing, runs it 4-5 times a day.
I think she has some kind of compulsive disorder.

Someone HAD to say it! But, yeah, Dyson is the "Bose" of the vacuum world. We got one a few years ago. I don't know the model of it just like my wife doesn't know the model of any of my audio equipment. We tried it, then returned it to the store and went back to using our 40 year old Eureka canister vacuum.

Hmmm . . . I don't know about the Bose analogy. We have pets and 3 girls with long hair in the house and have never had cleaner carpet (and I personally designed the original hoover.com website and was privy to a lot of research and free vacuums at that time). Also with 1 asthmatic in the home, the air quality during / after vacuuming is never an issue. We have 2 generations of the "animal" models.

Inspired, I haven't had tons of experience on vacuums, but our one criteria for one costing over $300 was that it had to outperform our very old Electrolux. It really didn't. Glad you like yours.

And yes, they were $400+, and just like our systems worth prices that would buy nice cars, worth it.

Aren't they like the Rolls Royce of vacuum cleaners? I have a couple of friends who bought them and have heard they work very well. Doesn't Eureka or Hoover have a similar designed model like the Dyson that runs about $175.00 or so?

Wasn't that the purpose? You post a video of a guy holding a vacuum cleaner to a slim chick and when the vacuum is turned off she morphs into a not-so-slim chick. I mean, how could it not turn into a serious discussion on vacuum cleaners

Yes the technology has been "borrowed" and now they all have it, we got a Bissell healthy home vacuum for 150 and it sucks! I never had a Dyson but hear good things. If you have carpet you need a carpet wet cleaner as well IMO

Know why modern America is having a problem with obesity ?
All these newfangled devices are spoiling our women when all the vacuum power ever needed can be found at the end of a broomstick.

Most women I have encountered lately seem to prefer to ride a broomstick rather than use one. Is it me or are women these days just more witchy for some reason ?

Actually, from what I've seen the best vacuum out there in terms of cleaning power is the Kirby. Too bad Kirby is all about door to door sales nonsense, and the brand has such a stigma attached to it because of it. Personally, we have a Hoover, it's probably 20 years old at this point and still going strong. When we sell the house I can see us going for a Kirby on eBay.

I replaced a cheapo walmart vacuum with a Dyson about 5 years ago, and haven't looked back since. I feel as if the Dyson I have does a great job with pet hair specifically (it is a pet model after all.) As other folks have said, you may be able to get the same technology out of a cheaper brand, but I really have enjoyed my Dyson.

I have one. After about a month, the hose broke. They sent me a new one, but the lady said it was a normal wear item. Don't think I will buy another one after this one crapps out.
