Default I need a new receiver, any help would be appreciated!!!

I currently have an older Onkoyo HTIB receiver. I have recently upgraded all the speakers to Polks...Monitor 75 towers for fronts, tsi300 towers for surround (origially was for fronts but got good deal on the 75's), cs20 center and a 505 sub. I have a limited budget and don't want to spend a ton more $$$??

Any help would be awesome. Thank you

    Mike

If you're comfortable with buying something used, I would recommend that route. What is your budget and do you think you'd ever add an external amp down the road?

Hi Mike. I'm sure most of the folks here will recommend getting a receiver that has preout connections. This is very good advice.
Pre-outs will allow you to add an amplifier in the future to get more from your speakers and will tend to "future-proof" your purchase to some extent.

One choice, would be an Onkyo TX-NR 709 receiver. Any Onkyo receiver in the 700 series or higher will have preout connections. Without knowing your budget, it's a little hard to give suggestions but the Onkyo can be purchased new from several places for about $499.00 (Amazon is one source), maybe cheaper elsewhere.
However, there are many good brand choices in this price range. Maybe you can tell us more about what you have in mind?

I'd agree completely with Sugarmill above and also add that you may want to look at AVR's with Audyssey XT32 autocalibration as well! Another 'future proof' suggestion because it can calibrate better and also has the ability to calibrate multiple (future ;-)) subs. Just in case!
    AVR - Onkyo NR809
500gb HD for MP3 and FLAC files
Amp - Parasound 2250 - FOR SALE BTW!! PM me if interested!
    Mains - Polk RTi12 towers
    Center - CSi5
    Surround - FXiA6's
    Sub - psw505
    Movies and games - PS3
    TV - Toshiba 52" HD

adb3da....I would certainly consider a used unit. As far as adding an amp...I can't so for sure it's out of the question but not looking to do that at this time.

Sugamillman...I've been looking at the 616 and the 709 which would be tapping my budget as I've seen refurbed for $450. My buddy as a Harman Kardon HTIB with little JBL speakers and this thing sounds good. I like the look of the HK units but seem pricey.

As of now the new onkyos no longer have pre-outs on the 7 series. The 717's replacement the 727 doesn't have them. Pre-outs start on the 827.

I would look at the 709 or the 809 if you can. The newer Onkyo's drop the Audyssey XT until you get to the higher end models, the rest just have 2EQ which is horrible.

So honestly get the 709, you have pre-outs for future use, Audyssey XT and enough HDMI and other ports to be good for a long time.

+1 on those who recommend getting a receiver with pre outs Mike. I also have the Monitor 75t and they'll swallow up to 275 watts. I bought a nice receiver, but still ended up getting an amp to drive the front 3 so I could get the most out of them. So, even if you can't afford an amp right now, picking up a receiver with pre outs will have you in the cue for when you can.

There are good deals to be had if you arent in a big hurry. Scour the usual sites for the brand\model your looking for and usually withing 30-45 days something will pop up. I bought a new Onkyo tx-nr809 off Amazon for $430 a couple months ago, so patience is key when deal hunting.

Used is a good way to go imo as you can get more for the money. Ebay can be a risk but you can get some pretty nice HTR's for cheap. Check your local Craigslist too.

As I said before, there any MANY good receivers in this price range. Everyone has their own favorites.
With Anthem, I believe you must order from a dealer and cannot get one online. Some here have commented that you don't get any unwanted frills with Anthem, only a bare bones receiver with proprietary room correction software.

Pre-outs is a must whether you do not think so yet. I was a little dissatified w/ my Yamaha RX-V665 because it clipped when pushed, I later found out that it was a combination of my pushing it and the fact it didn't have the proper room to get air flow going through it.W/ all that said for I think for $645 the new version w/ 105 wtts has all the inputs one could want could be a way to go. I did eventually add an external amp and it made all the difference. If your one not to blow up your sound w/ crazy levels then it should be fine and you still have the option later down the road.

Here's a great place for factory refurbs (Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Sherwood NewCastle). I've purchased numerous items from them & every transaction was flawless.
