    Default Expidit album storage pics

Hey all, I know there have been a few threads about album storage. I had previously used a two-square by four-square Expidit shelf from IKEA. I really like the look and function, so when we moved to our new house with a bigger living room, we bought a 4x4.

Now if you Google image 'expidit record storage' you can find some pretty nasty pics of these 4x4's coming apart and dumping albums. I don't think this is a common problem, but it obviously has happened.

So just to be on the safe side, I made some modifications to my shelf.

    Here are the pics...

I spray painted some small "L" brackets to match the finish of the shelf and screwed them into the corners of the end shelves that are only otherwise supported by wooden dowels. (the middle shelves are supported by the verticle running boards)

Next, I screwed 1/4" MDF board to the back of the unit to provide additional support from coming apart (reference the images of how the shelf has failed in some cases)

Before I attached the MDF, I painted the side facing the shelves the same color as the wall so we still get the intended effect of the 'see-through' shelf.

And here are a couple pics of the finished project. Hope you enjoy!

Well done! Doubt if you ever get any sag in the shelving, let alone completely falling apart.

Envious of your number of albums, and the rack. Looks great!

Good 'beef' job! I've seen book shelves fall apart in the same manner. A strong backboard is a big help. Like the wall color touch.

It looks quite nice I must say. Can't even tell there is a back!

Only thing I personally might change if I were to do it is to put some L brackets along the corners along the edges instead of the backing and mostly because I have no clue what paint color the apartment complex used lol.

That and if we moved I would have to repaint the backing.

    Thanks all!

No sag in the shelves, that's for sure.

Matching the paint was easy since we just had the living room painted. I didn't think it would turn out as good as it did, so I am happily surprised.

I've already started cleaning more vinyl. Everthing on the top shelves is cleaned, and all those on the bottom are in the queue
