Just got back from hookin' up with my homies Carl (schwarcw) and Ed (Savinon). We hit the NY Audio Show held at the The New York Palace. Then we went to Katz's Deli. Some of the highlight pics....so much to see.....

I'll take a brisket on rye with mustard, a pickle and a Dr. Brown's cream soda.

Looks like a nice show. What was the highlight?

BTW, did you rub your dingus on the SRT's?

Nice gear. Only recognize the Pass gear and Wilson (I think?) speakers. Isn't that sad?

I was there on Sat with a buddy of mine. We had a great time for sure. A lot of really nice stuff that gets the juices flowing. There were a lot of great sounding rooms & just as many not so great sounding. It's tough at those shows with the rooms they have to deal with. But all in all it was a day well spent. We drove up & got parking for $18.00 just 2 blocks from the hotel. I didn't think you could buy a bottle of water for $18.00 let alone park for the whole day.

Wow! That looks like a nice show with some very interesting speakers. So, when are you getting rid of those ESL's? ;)

I see some speaks with the ribbon tweets and Accuton ceramic mids, thoughts? Were any models using the RAAL ribbon?

How did the D'Augustino/Wilson/Transparent setup sound compared to the other rooms? Any choices for your best of show?

I liked the Joseph Audio speakers. The Spendors were also very nice. Rich and I kept looking for the subwoofer, there was none.

I am surprised Rich didn't post the picture of me trying to steal the Pass Labs 1000 watt mono block.

The Wilson's and the D'Augustine amps were great.

I was there Sunday with my son Jake. Sorry i missed you guys.

After the show Jake and i headed down to Stereo Exchange to hear some of the brands that weren't represented at the show.

I see you have a bunch of pics from the Coincident room. I agree, that might have been the best sounding system at the show, although I also enjoyed all three systems with the various Wilson's, as well as the KEF blades and the big Martin Logan/Krell setup, plus the Genesis ribbons, among many others.

Down near Katz's, at Stereo Exchange, heard some great electronics (various Macintosh and Audio Research rigs, primarily) playing through various Sonus Faber and Macintosh speakers).

I loved the Coincident Pure Reference Extreme, which were biamped with 8 watt SET mono blocks driving the monitors and bigger tube mono blocks driving the subs. I think the source was a VPI classic 4.

Were it not for the coincident system, the D'Agostino/Wilson Alexia system would have been my hands-down favorite.

Nice to see more rooms using acoustic treatments. Mostly corners/behind speakers, some with side walls done. We did not visit all rooms. Jesse, hard to pick a winner but the rooms we visited could be divided in that’s nice, let’s sit and listen or walk in and leave. I didn’t take pictures in all the rooms we went in so I linked to some.

Some of my fav sit down rooms….

The Wilson's with the D'Augustine amps were wonderful.

    The Kef room was nice.

Coincident Speaker Technology for the product and gal in tight skirt with snug top.

The CH Precision in the chairmans board room with Zellaton GRAND speakers were a fav of mine. Ed also picked his DAC chassis design there although I don’t think I can replicate it.

The Venture room, several speakers set up, I had to know what pair were playing. Pass mono blocks powering them.

Joeseph Audio was a nice room to be in.

Not my picture but these Raidho speakers with 1x3 ribbons sounded real sweet.

My pic didn’t come out so good so I linked to this one…Ed was really checking this pizza dough making thing out.

Not my pic. The Clue loudspeakers at $999 per pair were pretty impressive. It would have been nice to hear just a pair instead of the stacked pairs. IIRC they were connected in series due to well matched drivers. Just add some subs for the low end.

Carl in the LessLoss room. The room guy smiled and told Carl if he could lift it he could have it. Carl yelled for Ed and the guy said not him!! No deal!!

The shows can make you lust for something you can't afford, find something affordable to move on to, or make you glad for what you have. Still hanging on to my hybrid ESL's....I upgraded to a later model with better panels. I have a more powerful amp on the panels. Different pre and phono stage (all SS now). DIY turntable and DIY DAC.

I see some speaks with the ribbon tweets and Accuton ceramic mids, thoughts? Were any models using the RAAL ribbon?
Not sure about RAAL, but them Raidho's with ribbon tweets were nice.

Two real nice systems I spent some time with are Carl's and Ed's. Carl's with SDA's, and Ed with some surprising sounding older Sony ES speakers with well dialed in subs.

One of the best sounding rooms in the show. The best was the MBL room which they set up a full surround system with 4 JL audio subs , it was killer. I never heard MBL surround , probably one of best sounding I've ever heard. I heard MBL for 2 channel many times and they are top notch , after the Demo I would love to do a full MBL system in surround.

That looks like its a few steps above LSAF. We get a few high end speakers like that, but most of the gear is more "obtainable". I would absolutely love to go to a show of that caliber and have been thinking about trying to make it to RMAF sometime in the next few years. LSAF is still in its infancy, but I'm hoping it eventually builds up to something on par with those. Having a posse to go to a show with makes them that much more enjoyable though.

Shame you couldn't get that Pass. I would've broken my back before I quit trying to heave it over the shoulder.

I was impressed with the Raidho room featuring their bookies more so than the room with their floorstanders. The Brodmann Acoustics room was spooky good. The Clue speaker room was also outstanding considering their double stack was only 2K. A lot of the mega buck rooms left me scratching my head. Those hotel rooms are just downright tough to really get a real feel for the gear & the speakers.

Too funny Dan because of my listening experience in the Sony room which was directly above the MBL room. During the session it sounded like the subway was coming right thru the room, everyone all at once said...and I quote "what the hell was that"!! With dismay the poor guys working the room said it was that damn MBL room directly below us. That's how powerful their demo was. I didn't get a chance to hear the MB room due to the long lines. But boy oh boy was it cranking.

I was there on Saturday with a friend. My first audio show. I basically went to hear some speakers and look at the fancy turntables, didn't pay too much attention to the power sources. Wilson had 2 adjacent rooms. In one was the Alexia/D'ag system with some $33K cables for a total system price of about $260K. While the speakers themselves were tecnically exqusite, I felt that the system felt lifeless. I think it was in part due to the fact that the source was hi_rez files. In the room across the way, they had a cheaper speaker (only $28K--the model escapes me). Once again the hi rez files left me saying OK. However, when they turned on the vinyl, there was a dramatic difference. The speakers literally disappered and enveloped the room with a fantastic warmth. Next up were the Zellaton's from Germany. Another disappearing speaker with beautiful silver drivers. They were spinning vinyl. This room was on the 4th floor and unfortunately the were ripping up the street outside. The poor demo man who every few minutes would say "It's not the speakers, it's the jackhammers". I thought the Kef Blades sounded the best and that crazy ass, multi tiered Kronos turntable with 2 platters spinning in different directions was a bargain at $32K.

Back in the real world, the KEF R900's and the Marten Floorforms were speakers I could live with for a long time. However, I think the best bang for the buck were the Joseph Pulsars. Couldn't believe the sound coming from those boxes. Deep, distinct, tight bass.

So, what did I get out of my first audio show? Well I'm no reviewer and probably less discerning than some but "TO MY EARS" I think an investment of $15K can get you pretty close to the sound of those mega systems. Does that mean I wouldn't buy one if I could. Hell no, I like toys as much as the next guy.

Just want to mention that none of these speakers got a good workout. The music played was mostly lackluster, bordering on boring. Would have been nice to hear some of these babies cranked

What you experienced was typical of audio shows. Don't go expecting systems to be "cranked". Too loud and it would mean disturbing other exhibitors. The setups are meant to give you a little taste, from which you can develop a shortlist of equipment to audition in a better environment. Next time walk with some of your own music for exhibitors to play.
