Default Car Issue - Need Help - Can't Fill up the Tank!

    Hello All,

My wife has this problem with her car, it'll only take 1.2 to 1.4 gallons at a time. Every gas station attendant hates her. We've been to two Hyundai dealerships and they are clueless. The first time they said it was "Spiders", that the spiders make webs in some air valve/filter and after they vacuum it it'll be fine. It was good for one fill up.

Please see the Video, Have you ever seen this?

    Thanks,

    Sal

just a guess, but like above, would make sense that the vent isn't venting well.

Always use the slowest pump speed. Doesn't seem like it would be a problem unless it's not venting at all, and maybe a minor inconvenience when fueling up.

wait, what car is it? the green pump makes me think of diesel, and diesel foams, and will cause the auto shut-off in the handle.. it's normal. if not, then see above.

I agree, venting issue. I thought it was diesel at first too, but don't think the Sonata has a diesel in N.A. and when she selects the gas button, looks like one of the 3 gasoline options. I have a diesel and it has a venting button a few inches into the filler neck that can be pressed with the side of the nozzle to let air escape because diesel foams so much. If the fuel's going in, it has to move the air out. Possible that the filler neck got whacked with a rock or whatever and now has a restriction. But...this is happening to a lot of the same model? Anyway, whatever's causing it, I don't think the air is getting out fast enough.

Hey Sal.... Did you see this post on the other thread?

"The dealer was informed by the Hyundai technical support people of a check valve that they were unaware of. Once the check valve was replaced, they were able to fuel the car without difficulty. Unfortunately, the fuel level sensor in the gas tank was damaged through all this work, and it won't be fixed until tomorrow afternoon. I will be so happy to get my car back. I wonder if this fueling problem is general, or is confined to Hyundais. Thank you for your input."

Have heard other makers having the same issue with some of their models, not sure who?

Boy that is weird. Never seen that before. Definitely venting issue. Try leaving the nozzle out a bit. I think I've had a similar issue with my GF's car and pulling the nozzle out 1-2 inch solved it. Was at a couple select pumps we dont normally fill at.

This happens on our Mazda MPV.

The gas pump will shut off as if the tank is full and only a gallon or so has been dispensed.

It's a stop and go slow, stop and go slow ritual to get a full tank in.

Canister vent valve is stuck closed. Believe it or not the spiderweb explanation isn't complete BS, but on an older Hyundai (Elantra?) it's more then likely the vent valve.

yeah my work truck has the same problem but worse. it only takes 25 cents worth at a time no matter how slow you pump. i have found one station in town that i can pump on the lowest setting that works. i agree with what was said before its a venting problem.

2010 Hyundai Elantra. My wife made another video today with the attendant filling it and as he walks away it clicks off. She had him try 2 more times and she got 3.8 gallons of gas.

She's bringing it back in to the Dealer Monday with lots of print-outs from various forums.

    Thanks!

Usually if you turn the key off and turn it back on it resets the fuel gauge. They make them slow to respond so when fuel is sloshing in the tank the needle isn't bouncing all over the place.

Also adding more fuel to the tank after the automatic shut off kicks off can cause problems like this. If you over fill the tank it gets liquid fuel in to the evaptoration and venting system and it causes problems.

My bet is the vent valve; happened to my titan and was a fairly common thing with the nissan trucks. Might be the same issue with your car. I would have them check that first.
