I like the idea of an electric car, but to me, the inconvenience of driving it long distances and looking for charging stations is still a concern. That's why I bought a regular Prius IV. Considering I live at the top of a long hill, I get decent mileage, about 55mpg. A tank of gas (10 gallons) lasts me about 500 miles. I don't have to worry about how far it is to the next charging station. I drive about 10,000 miles/year. That means I use about 180 gallons of gas. In Hawaii, the price of a gallon right now is about $4.40, so I spend about $800/year or about $65/month.

Think about this... If I was to buy a 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, it is rated at 40mpg. At 10,000 miles, I would use about 250 gallons of gas or about $90/month. That does not sound too bad considering the size and class of the car. If I was living in Texas (@$3.40/gallon), I would only spend about $70/month. The car has a 16-gallon tank, so it has a range of about 600 miles.

True....even gas stations charge for air, so the costs of these charges has to be added in too. Like everything else, they will start cheap and then climb as more get on board.

Also curious Sal, if you've figured out yet how running the AC/heat along with a few assesories like wiper blades and radio effect the battery time. Something most would use at the same time.

Btw Sal, I'm only asking because a family member is thinking of buying the same car. Looking for practical info rather than the junk you hear from the dealer.

Well, I've only driven twice to the city so far. The first time I listened to my iPhone via Bluetooth and had the iPhone plugged in and charging and on the way home I did the same and had my driving lights on and I used exactly the mileage and battery levels I thought I would.

The second time I went to the same neighborhood and on the return trip I used the heat and so I used up about 5% more battery charge.

I've read a review from a guy who lives In Brooklyn, he said that his round trip is so close from killing the battery that in the winter time he can't use the heat or he'll die 3 miles from home on the return trip!. He said he has to use a comforter over his body and legs while driving to stay warm. That's dedication. LOL!

    Tony,

To test myself to see if I could use this car successfully I reset my trip odometer everyday for the past 3 months to see how many miles I used daily and that amount came out to an average of 51 miles per day. There were 4 or 5 days that used 74 miles and a couple of days that I used 100.

So most likely 2 or 3 times a month I may need to use my wife's car.

She has the same commute everyday and its under 50 miles per day. So she can use mine with no problems.

Your family member should do the same tests. I wish I could have waited to 2014 because the rumor is a larger battery which gives more range.

    Congrats on the new ride!

The neighborhood where I live has a number people owning pure electric cars....Nissan Leaf, Tesla....not to mention the various hybrids (pull-in or otherwise). My local McDonalds even has 3 charging stations for electric vehicles. I know....shocking.

As for the longevity of the batteries, I've heard that those in hybrids can get as much as 200,000 miles. Most taxi cabs in San Francisco are hybrids and that's what the cab companies are saying.

I have heard the same, even hear some large cities want all the taxis to be Hybrids. Hybrids and pure electric cars will benefit from city driving, stop and go traffic, no advantage on long high speed highway commutes.

Great read, don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out if all cars went electric that nothing will have to change, just build them and they will buy them with no idea what it will take to keep you on the road.

Bought this Charger yesterday, It should charge the Leaf up from Dead to 100% in 4 hours.

The Bad part is that if you read the fine print the 3 year warranty is void unless you connect the charger with their wiring kit which is another $115!!!!

FYI, Fisker is in deep do-do.
Heard yesterday on a Auto show last night that Fisker looses $557,000 per car they make. Say what, did a search and could not find anything on the web as of now, will keep looking...

Tomorrow I'm going to start running the wire to connect the 40A Level 2 Charger.

I have the Leviton EVK05-M 50A Mounting Kit which contains a NEMA 6-50R Receptacle, Gang Box, Outdoor plug enclosure and Metal mounting bracket. I also have 60 feet of 3 conductor 8 gauge wire that I just got as a gift from my next door neighbor (thanks Joe!). He said he has a 50A (2) Pole breaker someplace.

This is the wall where I will be mounting the Level 2 Charger:

I really need this Level 2 charger because today I couldn't leave for work until 11AM because it took that long to charge my Battery to 100%. Yesterday I used up 71% of the battery.

I got 2 2002 Hyundai Elantras one is a GT and the other is a GL both bought new.
The only problems was the struts had to be replaced on both at 60K miles and a purge valve, a thermostat, rear brake caliper and radiators on both. I did most the work myself and Rock Auto is great, parts are cheap.
Its been 10+ years so not bad at all.
Glad you got a new one, I will be watching for that problem on mine.

Good thing your self employed ( you are right)? Imagine having to explain to your boss that the reason your late for work is because your car was not fully charged. Just joking hope the new charger works out for you.

I spoke with Hyundai and they are going to fix everything under the recall. My local Hyundai dealer said he will give me forms to submit to get reimbursed for the tow i had to pay to get the car to my house when it died. If they fix everything and it doesn't cost me anything I'll just keep the car as a spare.

Did you ever change the timing belt and water pump?

On these cars they state that should be done every 60K miles, I've done it twice so far.

Yes, I am self employed. I took that into consideration when buying the car as well. The Level 2 charger should charge the car in 4 hours, So I don't think I'll ever have a problem again. Usually I need a minimum of 5 hours of sleep at night, so I'll be home that long at the minimum between clients.

I've lit up the tires a few times and I beat people off the line all the time. It's very fast with the 100% torque off the line!.

I did the gt timing belt with the kit idler at at 85k and the gl at 65k and other accessory belts but I did not do the water pump on either. I knew if the belt went so would the engine but I thought I would chance the water pump. The cars have 98k and 83k about a year and a half since it was done.
So there is a recall on the lower arms, do they simply stress fail from age or use?

They fail because of road salt and not enough drainage holes. Water will sit inside the control arms rusting from the inside out.
