It will still be coming from oil, just converted to a different form. Here in NYC Con Ed runs a mix of No. 6 oil and Natural Gas to produce our electricity, we don't burn any coal.

But the advantage of an electric or hybrid vehicle is when you are at a complete stop, which occurs very frequently in commutes like mine, you are only running your heat/ventilation/AC and accessories (like headlamps and radio).

It's kind of like zoned HVAC for houses. How many houses do you see where the entire house is being heated in the winter even though the family is only using 3-5 rooms at a given time? That's what I am talking about. Sitting at idle in a gasoline powered car makes no sense when you are getting 0MPG.

Not like your not using electricity either sitting in traffic at idle. Either way, you use energy doing nothing at idle and that I don't think can be avoided.

To each his own however, if it works for you and your lifestyle, nail it then as Sal did. Doesn't mean it's meant for everyone though.

You are using electricity, but less than that of a gas car running at idle. The electricity being used is to power the accessories, such as the radio, in-car electronics, air conditioner, headlights, turn signals, etc. This works out for me because I spend a lot of time sitting at idle in NYC traffic.

Also the air quality is better. Ever drive on the LIE going into Manhattan at 7AM rush hour? Or I-95 through the Washington D.C. area in 5PM traffic? You literally can't keep your windows open on a nice day because of all the cars nearby. The worst I experienced was in Louisville, KY during an evening rush hour and it was terrible. I immediately had a runny nose, and felt sick. By the time I got to the hotel, I felt like I breathed in fumes from an open stove for 2 hours.

I use 250 watts with no lights on sitting with my car in traffic and around 375 watts with the lights on.

My Battery on a full charge can push out 22,000 watts per hour. With no lights on I can stand still in traffic 88 hours straight.

With my lights on 58.6 hours.

But you must remember I regenerate my Battery as well. So if there is a hill and I can coast I will recharge a bit. How much that is depends on a lot of scenarios.

The thing to remember is that it cost me only $2.84 to fill up and I'll get 70 to 100 miles.

Yesterday I filled up my 2003 Hyundai and it was $3.27 a gallon and I was getting around 25.2 MPG, So $13.08 for 100 miles.

Even if electricity use went north at a good clip, you think rates would be cheaper ? No Sir., they would skyrocket to make up for the lost revenue from gasoline. Just being real Sal, solar/wind/electric even combined isn't enough to replace gasoline/oil as a primary energy source. May help to reduce dependency, grant you, but replace.....your dreaming pal.
Tony you can disagree with me, that's fine, but I did say 50 years. We'll check back at this thread every 10 years and we'll have to see! ;)

Some users on the my nissan leaf forum were concerned that the cord was being smushed under my garage door and may cause problems. So today I cut a groove in the concrete slab so that it fits under door and can move back and forth freely.

Wouldn't it have been easier to park in the garage to charge it? No snow removal in the winter either.

I am not saying this will happen to you of course but it brings back the memory that one of my friends came home from vacation and his neighbor had ran a extension cord from my friends house to his and I guess forgot he was coming back home that day.

If I clean out the garage my wife gets it. Not me. It's 14' wide. Big enough for one car. Not two.

I'm parked 24" from my house. If anybody runs over this cord there will be damage to my house, car and his car.

Some kid on your street could unplug the cord to the car at night, nice ramp for mice to enter your garage that you cut out

I live in a good neighborhood. No punk kids on my block.

Those mice would not enter unless they want to commit suicide. I have 2 cats that live in the garage. (The ones that scratched my speakers once)

I was interested in the volt until I saw the price tag and the battery only gets you 40 miles range.

Plus the car sends me an email if somebody unplugs it.

It also has a lock that I can engage from the inside so nobody can remove the charging cable.

Oh geez Sal, don't go down that road.

I think most people are for having choices....in every aspect of their lives. Just not the ones forced down their throat or subsidized with our own money by 500+ parents 2000 miles away. Free markets will deliver choices people want. If people want electric cars, they'll make them....and sell them like hotcakes.

Crap....I myself just went down that road, didn't I ?

Since i am now old enough not to crave a loud growl from under the hood or show off to young girls peeling out the tires on my 70s era chevelle, i would love to own an electric/hybrid car under the right circumstances.

To be able to drive past the gas stations, even if the savings were offset by the cost of car and electricity, would be sweet.

And to never have to worry about the all the maintenance and repair of the internal, and external parts of a typical engine, that too would be sweet.

In a perfect world, other peoples money would not be used to subsidize my car, but we all know its not a perfect world, and certainly not the first industry to receive subsidies.

    Drive on sal.
