I'm not familiar with any analog to USB converters.

I don't think there's any such thing as an analog to USB converter. If you're referring to a USB to spdif converter then there is no analog section.

What he's describing is the analog output section of the DAC, not necessarily the jacks themselves but the circuitry feeding those. If those are run through a cheap opamp then having the best chip in the world upstream doesn't make any difference, you want discrete analog outputs.

That being said, having the most robust outputs in the world doesn't make a bit of difference if you've got a crappy USB implementation or a really bad chip design upstream either.

    In short, everything matters

Yep, there are definitely some new DACs that give you the best of both worlds. That is the case my Audio GD DAC for sure. I'm just saying, if you have to skimp somewhere, skimp on the cutting-edge whiz-bang digital stuff... don't skimp on the analog section.

Correct. But a newer DAC that doesn't skimp will knock the old stuff off the shelf. My Parasound DAC is long gone. I had one with the transport.

I had the Parasound DAC 2000 Ultra with belt drive C/BD-2000 transport. Great combo! The transport eventually died and I couldn’t get parts to fix it.

Thanks! Great memories of that DAC.

IIRC the ModWright high current exteremely low distortion Class A tube output Sony was next. First Dan's 999ES then his 9100ES. I stayed content with that for many years. Then I built a single Twisted Pear BIII DAC. It was that or spend $800 and have Dan add a digital in mod to the Sony. I was more ignorant than, price seemed high. Dan said he needed to add a clock to the input. I was like but it has a $400 clock in it with the first mod? Now I understand of course....he was reclocking the S/PDIF digital input to reduce jitter levels.

Anyway, Ed Savinon dropped by for a couple days on vaca. The single Buffalo III was just a rats nest cookie sheet build at that time. I thought it sounded great but did not say anything to Ed about it. I stuck it in and he said you have to build me one of these! That is when I went all out dual mono with balanced output. Ed heard it as single ended out which sounds very good. SE goes through some high quality op amps in a nicely designed circuit. Balanced out is fully discrete.

I've got my eyes on something special, but its not a DAC. If I get it, I won't have the funds to get a 'nice' DAC, but I think I'll be happier with this purchase than a DAC that I'm scared to buy at this point. As I told Danny, the USB technology is just moving too rapidly for me right now to feel comfortable throwing a lot of dough at a 'good right now' DAC. Since that is my main target with a DAC, I think I should just wait a year or two and re-evaluate where they are at.

I just bought an Oppo 105 that sorta fits the description of this thread, with a blu ray player attached, we'll see how it works out.

I just listened to my PS Audio NuWave last night, SB Touch USB > NuWave USB and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't do any A/B'ing with the SPDIF but first impression was that it sounded even better. I think it definitely fits the 'warmth over extreme detail' requirement.

12 hours in, and the Oppo 105 is VERY good. I'm surprised there's not more talk or hype about this product. This could seriously be the last DAC or player I'll ever need, even though I know better than to say that.

It was very good out of the box, but a little harsh on some tracks. It's already smoothed out quite a bit and I imagine it'll end up right where I like the sound.

I'll do some critical listening after a few days of burn in and report back, but this thing is damn spectacular!

I am new to DACs too. Im starting with a small guy. Its the Music Streamer II by HRT.

This small red box is awesome. Its no Bryston but this device is under 200 and is a solid starter DAC. I am enjoying my itunes library with better sound. I am also playing with Flac files from HDtracks.com. I just got Muse the 2nd law (96kHz 24bit) and its crazy. Also got some Talking heads in Flac.
