Was offered a pair of SDA1's ( identacle to the photo in the vintage products section listed as sda1B. ) What is the real money on those in good condition needs grill cloth redone. And where do they stand in the sda "family"?

1B is the first in the "1" series to delete the SDA tweeter in favor of a vertically-stacked two-tweeter progressive point-source.

In short, a huge improvement over the previous two-tweeter arrangement.

The 1C Studio version is visually identical except for black woodgrain finish instead of brown woodgrain finish.

Prices are surprisingly low for a 1B. Anywhere from $200--$400 for the pair, in working condition but not "rebuilt", except for those sellers who are testing the market, trolling for idiots, or simply unaware of real sale prices.

Appropriately refurbished, they sound VERY good. Nominal 4-ohm design, so beware of cheap junk amps/receivers that mess the bed with less than 8 or 6 ohm loads. Any amp rated for a nominal 4 ohm load should work fine. I powered mine for many years with a late-'70's JVC receiver.

I really enjoy mine, I've owned, still own, quite a few highly regarded speakers over the years. My 1Bs have earned a spot in my main system and I doubt they'll ever get replaced. If they have the stock caps in them, you may be a little disappointed on your first listen, I was. Mine sounded kind of veiled and muddy till I recapped them, but after the recap they really opened up.

    Soundfreak,

from a conversation we had in the past about our Polk gear and the way you describe your RTA12's etc, I doubt you would be impressed with the SDA 1's (of any series). i could be wrong and if I could get them at a real good deal i would advise you to try them any way. From speaking to you our perceptions seem similar on many of the models and i personally have never been impressed with any SDA 1 model that I have heard. They do sound good, I don't want to sound as if I am bashing them. But they just don't compare to the SDA 2A/B's or the RTA 12's and other models in overall balance, tonal characteristics, etc. They do however produce the SDA effect. This of course is just my opinion and not necessarily that of many other members here.
