Default Okay, I'll try to be more specific, since no one has answered my question.

Again, when I find the time, I wish to hook up a receiver and use it as the "sound card" of sorts for my PC.

My new question is, which is a better means of connection for sound reproduction: HDMI or SPDIF/Toslink?

Thanks for any help and suggestions for this endeavor. I am still very much intrigued to learn why so many people read my original query concerning the use of a digital receiver to power the speakers I want to use for my PC gaming/music, and had nothing to suggest, or even an inkling of why it is not a recommended course of action. Please know that I'm not trying to belittle the Polk forum denizens at all; this has been the standard (non)response wherever I have posted about this. It truly forces me to think that perhaps I'm doing something unheard of, or I'm perhaps asking something that to most others would be considered a silly question. I don't know, but I very interested in the lack of interest. heh.

S/PDIF can carry two channels of uncompressed lossless PCM audio or compressed 5.1/7.1 surround sound such as Dolby Digital Plus or DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. But, it does not have the capacity to carry the uncompressed data in the lossless formats of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, as HDMI does. So, I guess it depends on your speaker set-up and preference if you want multi-channel lossless audio direct from the source.

Sound wise there is going to be little to no difference between the 2 connections. Video wise, hdmi is the ticket for both, plus with hdmi you will be able to get the newer sound codecs from your movies or if your games have them.

If your looking to use your computer as a hub for gaming/music/movies, hdmi is the only connection to consider. Of coarse I'm talking in general since you haven't said what the other equipment is. Plus if quality of sound is important to you, using your computer as a hub for all this takes a tad more thought than just connections. Visit the digital section and search around some threads, read up.

BTW, we do have a search feature.

It sounds like you are taking the lack of responses personally, which is probably not the case. Just because someone starts a thread, does not mean that others have interest or want to answer the question. I've had plenty of threads where I was the only poster, and sometimes people just don't have any interest in the topic. Remember that the more you contribute to the forum and help others, the same will be returned to you.

I'm sorry, zingo, but did you not see the remark in my comment that specifically said that I was in no way trying to knock the lack of responses here, and that I haven't gotten any suggestions anywhere else, so I merely asked if it due to a dig. receiver not being a good sound base for control? Also, this is most assuredly not my first delving into forums; I'm well aware of the give and take involved. It was merely a question, not a demand for credit card numbers. sheesh.

This is not the only place I've gone to for some help in this; I only came here because I now have both Polk Audio speakers and a new Polk Audio subwoofer.

I tried the search feature and got nothing to go to. Guys look; I am heartily sorry for wasting all of your time here. I now know that I have no business here, and I'll take my questions elsewhere. Preferably where the fora members aren't quite so ready to bash the questioner. Bye!

I would say the lack of response here and elsewhere might be due to folks not having experience with what you are asking about.

As for the sheer number of looks, there are a lot of guests here. They can look, but not post.

As for bashing you, that has not happened here, period.

Honestly amgala gave you a pretty straightforward answer. Try not having such a chip on your shoulder and taking things so personal. A list of the setup (pc output options, display, etc) might help us help you as well. Honestly if you can do hdmi, do it. Seems that you have your answer, do you not like it?

I did see that, but perception is a hard thing to overcome, and any post of the above sort gives a negative impression, even to those of us who are just here to help.

And yes, Jesse is correct as he always is...
