Default SDA 1C VS SRS of ANY Model

Now by the end of Oct. I will have the money to go full tilt on upgrades for my SDA 1C's What i really would like is a set of SRS 1.2TL's...LOL But that seems almost imposable. There are never any close by, so i would have to pay for shipping. You also never see them and if you do it's on ebay, and the people are pretty much out of hand on the price and will not ship them no matter what.

My question would be are any of the SRS models (if i can get any one of them 1.2 - 3.1) just heads and tails better then the 1C's ? In the case of the 3.1's I really don't see it. You have 1 extra driver, but 1 less tweeter, with the same 12" pr. Some how i don't see the 3.1's being that much better then the 1C's? If i spend alot of money on upgrades to the 1C's i can't buy a set of SRS.

Should i just keep sitting and waiting, and waiting..etc: On the chance i may find a set of SRS's, OR is there really not a massive amount of difference between the 1C's and the SRS (of any model), and once the upgrades are done, what difference there may have been now becomes very small?

Upgrade the 1Cs. You spend almost nothing for "shipping", so practically all your money goes to sonic improvement.

The 1C is a very capable design. Small enough to work in smaller rooms, big enough to fill a moderately-huge room. Nearly identical electrically to the SRS 2 pin/blade version, although the SRS 2 has a larger cabinet and a larger passive radiator.

WOW SDA1C..that much of a difference huh...not really the answer i was hoping for, but more along the lines of what i expected. I have tried a few of the new "wonderful" tower speakers, the 1C's wiped the floor with them, even the RTi12's the 1C's had better bass to boot, they just dug lower and hit you harder, which i would not expect, but they do.

What size room are you running the SRS in? What did you like about the SRS, compared to the 1C's?

I would look for the 2.3TLs or the SRS2's,,,

You should be able to (someday) find a set of SRS2's for not much more than you can get for the 1c's, so it almost becomes a wash on price, and then upgrade the SRS2's. The 2.3TL's on the other hand are just that much better. I agree with 1c completely on that point.

I have had the pleasure of owning the 1c's, the 2.3TL's and several pair of 1.2TL's. I just completed the tweeter and XO's on my current set of 1.2TL's and can say these are easily the best of the bunch. Bass, imaging, soundstage, detail, everything is just superb. If you have a large enough room for them, I would wait 'til hell freezes over and be willing to go the distance needed to get a pair.

The SDA-1c's are no slouch and are great modded, and will never disappoint, but they will not come close to a full mod set of the big dogs IMHO.

Fully modded 2.3TL's are a Polk speaker to behold. They are also a sight to behold if you've never seen them. I tend to agree with John here. If SDA is your end-game speaker design, hold out for the 2.3TL's and upgrade as you can.

well thanks for the info...nothing like telling me my 1C's are not so good, on fathers day...LMAO...Just kidding..LOL

It's pretty much what i knew, but didn't want to admit to. The problem is i live in GA..in a stereo deprived area. Nobody around here would have these speakers..if they do they are not selling them.

Case in point some guy is trying to sell a set of RTi9's used..with one of the legs broken..and he wants 1K for them..LOL Now nobody is going to buy them. but thats what your dealing with. The big "stereo" store is Best Buy..if that tells you anything...LOL

I guess once Oct, hits and i HAVE the money...i will sit for a while..search all over the place for some SRS speakers. But at a point..i'm going to fold and start pouring money into the 1C's..

I'm a little biased for my 3.1TL's. However, I would probably break the bank if a pair of 1.2TL's came up locally.

Well so you know I have the 1C with the new tweeters and x-overs and I also have the 2.3 tls done the same way, following the Parts list with the new boards on Gimpod.com

Now you don't have to buy the most expensive caps out there you know.
Almost any will be an upgrade to the Mexican dried out caps that you have now.
Besides with the Gimpod boards you can easily upgrade later.

The 1C cannot be the 2.3tls but for the difference in what I paid for them I would not expect to be, $250 vs $2500+tax . If you have a set do the tweeters and the crossovers it will be a pleasant experience for you.

Yes I don't see the 3.1 as that much better than the 1C but then again it may just be a sweet spot or crossover design but why they went with one tweeter (but a SL3000) I don't know, seems like it would be over driven.

One thing nice about the 2.3tls, if you can find some is they use all 6510 which make it easier to keep spares.

Now I would offer to let you come over and compare but you like so many others here are paranoid as to where you live.

IF I knew your general area I could even help you look

I am just starting the process to mod my 2.3's. The polyswitches started kicking in at pretty low volume. I love there sound. What is considered fully modded for these?

I would not spend coin upgrading the 1c's if it is your intention to move up the chain in October anyway. I would actually suggest finding a buyer for your 1c's and combine that cash with the upgrade fund and be ready to jump on a set of SRS as soon as they come available. There is a minty set of SRS2's about 7 hours drive from you in St. Louis right now. With where you live I would expect to drive 8 hours in any direction to snag a set. Given the vast array of members here, it should not be hard to get a set of trusted eyes on a pair of speakers and maybe even get PolkEX involved to help get them to you.

Good luck man, and as always CP is here to ask the time honored question "What's in YOUR wallet?" and help you spend it!

The 2A's, 2B's and CRS+ also use one tweeter, so it's not like that design is new to the 3.1TL's. It may also interest you to know that the 3.1TL's do not have any tweeter protection. Drive any of them with quality gear and you won't have a problem. Try driving them with less than gear and think cranking it is a good idea will make you quickly realize otherwise.

I own a pair 3.1TL's modded and a pair of 2.3TL's modded. i would take the 2.3TL's over the 3.1TL's absolutely. As others have brought up, it does depend on room size. I would still take the 3.1TL's over the 1C's, IMO. There is not as big of a difference between the 1C's and 3.1TL's and the 3.1TL's and 2.3TL's, however but there is definately a favorable difference to the 3.1TL's. Get what works for your budget, room, and listening preferences. I think it can be said that you can't go wrong with a pair of 2.3TL's.

Yea but the 3.1 has a lot more MW drivers so I thought it a little odd.

BTW I have 4 new Mills .22 ohm resistors in my "Polk Drawer" so I am getting ready
to trade out the poly switch

To me the 1C's (or any of the 1's) are the weakesdt of the bunch aside from the original dimensional tweeter designs.

I have contacted seller in Columbia SC but no response yet. Can't help but wonder if it isn't the set I missed out on in the thrift store in greenwood a while back.

Sorry for the delay. We have just recently moved and been busy as all get out. The instrument separation is by far more defined by the 2.3 than the 1c. I give credit to the donut drivers and extra tweeter for that due to the ?vertical footprint? seems to make the sound taller and add dimension. The equipment/cables is and was identical with both sets and in both rooms. My room was 16x24x8 with a cut out to the kitchen being 10x8 when first comparing the 2.3 to the 1c. I instantly noted a marked improvement. I did notice, however, that the 2.3 were very touchy when not aligned exactly to one another, and the wall, in that room. They are in an 18x27x8 room now with a doorway size cut out to the rest of the house, and really opened up. I gave more bass to the subs and moved the 2.3 away from the wall about 8 more inches totaling 14 inches where the first room was 6 inches from the wall. I do not have the bass braces connected. My listening position moved back about 8 feet from the first room giving what seems to be smoother sound rather than it being in your face. I am anxious to upgrade the xovers on the 2.3 and see what shakes loose.

I have not tried the 1c in the new house. Honestly, because I do not want to be disappointed in 1k$ worth of mods.

Error correction- I have also installed brass spikes to the 2.3.

Thanks for all the info guys and SDA1C. There is no seance in me looking for these speakers now. I will wait till i have cash in hand, which will be at the end of Oct. Driving hours on end to pick up speakers is out of the question for me. I have a mustang convertible, barley fit a set of Advents in the car, plus my back is shot. Could just not do the drive, so shipping is the only answer.

I originally posted the size of my music room as 17x30...that is NOT correct, i somehow got those mixed up with the living room. The real room size is 13X28 X 7 1/2 tall dropped ceiling.

I don't think that should effect a set of SRS's..should be plenty of room for them. The 1C's love the room, and give you plenty of bass. They sit 1 foot off the back wall, i sit about 14 feet or so back in the room. It works very well set up like that.

I have tried new speakers to replace the 1C's, but they just don't work. These are all tower type speakers, which 98% of any new speakers seem to be these days. Even the massive RTi12's which i think is the biggest tower speaker Polk has ever made. You would think with the 3 7" bass drivers they would give you more bass then the 1C's, but they just don't. The 1C's just go deeper, and hit you harder.

Now IF i could for go the SDA "effect" I should be able to call Polk, have them send me a set of LSiM 707's right to my door. I should be able to unpack them, hook them up and be in sonic bliss. Now from the midrange on up, that may be true. But if the massive 12's can't beat the 1C's for bass, i don't see the 707's fairing much better.

When i have the money in hand, i will be looking everyday for a set of SRS, but after a certain amount of time..the money will start burning a hole in my pocket, and i will cave and start rebuilding the 1C's...LOL

There is one thing i don't get on the 2.3's. In some pic's (on the polk site) all the drivers look the same. On whats being sold on ebay and such, 2 of the drivers look like there PR's or have some kind of cover on them..is that normal? If it is normal, i have NEVER seen replacement drivers like that ANYPLACE. Could this end up to be a massive problem to replace these???

I believe what you're referring to is the earlier 2.3's, which used two donut drivers, vs. 2.3TL's, which used all MW 6510's. Not sure exactly the reason for the donut drivers, hopefully someone will chime in.

I've never heard these two speakers side by side, but I've read that the 2.3TL's are considered to produce a little higher SQ.

Are the "donut" drivers active, or just PR's ?? I have seen a set of 2.3's for sale but the guy is saying a few drivers are "frozen"..including the "donuts" Now if there active and you could replace them with MW 6510's...thats not a hugh problem. MW 6510 you can get. But if there PR's and really frozen. I have NEVER seen a set of those for sale ANYPLACE.

The 2.3's you speak of can be had for around 400 bucks... that may be worth taking a shot, but I am unsure if a 6510 can be substituted for the 6513's. Everything else can be fixed.

    *EDIT*

A call to the very good folks at Polk reveals they have 84 replacement drivers in stock for the 6513's and ready for immediate shipping.
