    Default Frank Sinatra CD recommendations

So I realized that even with my large CD collection that I don't have any Sinatra albums. I'm ok with live albums or compilations, just looking for any good representation of his work on an album or two.

    The Concert Sinatra.
Strangely named "studio" recording of Frank at his best. Includes Old Man River.

The original Sinatra Duets album was very good. It came out in 1993, I believe.
It is an album of classic Sinatra songs done with some other great singers (Bono, Tony Bennett, Barbara Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Julio Iglesias, etc).

Frank Sinatra was my father's favorite singer (he grew up NYC in in the era of big bands, etc) and I remember listening to tons of Frank Sinatra while growing up. At the time I did not care for Sinatra, lol, but, as time pased, I came to appreciate how great he was as a singer. I remember that, when the Duets CD came out, my father bought copies for the whole family (7 brothers and sisters) and gave us all a copy.

From your post, it sounds like maybe you wanted to get a CD of just vintage Sinatra in his prime. Duets came out when Sinatra was around 70 years old so vintage Sinatra it is not but it is a hell of a good album, imho.

    What he said.

Edit - the duets album is great as well, I would buy all three and be done with it. There is a lot of Sinatra available, I went down that rabbit hole once.

Agree with The Capitol Years, The Reprise Years and the Duets album.
That being said, you can easily overwhelm yourself on Sinatra recordings. But the 3 listed above end up being a greatest hits compilation.

For sound quality, I highly recommend any of the hybrid SACD's by Mobile Fidelity or the 24Kt gold CD's of Nice N' Easy and Only The Lonely. These all have great music on them too.

Check out some of the cds done with Mays or Riddle, nice stuff and it really swings. Frankly speaking, no pun intended, please, avoid the Sinatra 80th live cd, it was obvious the old age of Frank's pipes and ability to remember the verses of the songs were fleeing, rather sad....

An amazing album with Sinatra singing music arranged by Quincy Jones and backed by Count Basie and his orchestra. The Basie band grooves harder than any big band I've ever heard. You can really sense how they inspire Sinatra, pick him up and carry him along.

When I was in Australia a couple of years ago I bought a Japanese CD of Count Basie live. When I got home and read the liner notes I learned that it was a recording of their warm up set prior to Sinatra coming on at the Sands. IIRC the shows that are the basis of these albums took place in 1965, so Sinatra still had full command of his voice.

The only negative is you have to listen to Sinatra's comedy act for about 20 minutes. It's a little painful given that it's alot of "Amos 'n Andy" type stuff. But then again he had a history of supporting and performing with black musicians.

I ended up going with the one below. Even though I didn't see it mentioned here it seems to generally be very well liked and is one of the few true 5-star items I've seen rated on Amazon. I've been through it once, really like it a lot. It's a good recording though not reference, and it isn't squashed, it has very good dynamic range.

No, no and no.. You must get the recordings he did with Count Basie.. The orchestra and his voice are amazing together.. Turn it up and you're listening to 2 giants belting it out together.. Remastered and sounds fantastic.. A must own!

+1 Found this yesterday for $10, wow is it EVER impressive! Nice song selection, and the recording is beyond what I thought it could sound like from that era. Great separation and very "black" in the quiet spots and between songs. If you like Frank and/or the Count I agree with cvc, this is a must have.
