"Harmless" was the key word in the title. A lot of these are good pranks, but not ones I would personally ever try at work. I like the idea of the rear USB since most of us here use headphones while working.

^ To add another to the list when we walk away from our computers we are supposed to lock them so no sensitive info gets seen by others, copied to flash drives, etc....

One day I had to run to the bathroom due to being sick so I left my computer unlocked.......

I came back to an email from myself with a subject line titled "This screen could have been filled with porn, or maybe I could have emailed your boss and called him some choice names, Please remember to lock your computer"

Needless to say this is a prank I enjoyed duplicating across the office when others left their computers unlocked.

That gets done a lot here ^^ Both of my supervisors are pretty cool, so I sent one an email from the other requesting a raise for me...haha. It was (and I made sure of) clearly a joke and everyone involved got a laugh out of it.

One of the same supervisors actually left his computer unlocked yesterday. He's a strict republican, so I put an Obama desktop on his computer.

Here's a couple I've done to people. One of them retaliated by hiding about 10 pine tree air fresheners around my desk. Came into work and wondered what the hell the awful smell was.. Took me a while to find them all.. some were really well hidden..

Trick is to find the exact keyboard they have which isn't usually too difficult in an office environment. I then take their good keyboard out and swap in the modified version. After you let them sweat a bit trying to figure out where all the keys go, you can then just swap keyboards back.

The one with all the keys missing has "SMILE" spelled out in the pile of keys. The other I scattered the keys around their desk.

I used to have a program that I would email to people. I told them it was a really funny joke but it was recorded really low. And so I suggested they turn up their speakers before running it. As soon as they ran it, it would disable their mouse and keyboard and say really LOUD "HEY! EVERYBODY, I'M LOOKING AT PORN OVER HERE!!!!!" LOL, It was so funny!!! LMAO

I used to do this too but I found the location of the desktop image and saved a copy elsewhere hidden in some system folder and I created a batch routine that copied the same image back every 5 mins and I used the task scheduler, so even when they changed the back ground it would change back every 5 mins!!! LOL

Are there any pranks you guys pull that could get a laugh and be acceptable in the workplace?

My boss once took out a Happy Birthday ad in the local paper for her old boss on his birthday.

After reading all of your pranks, I just have to tell this one.

Even though it is a Wedding Prank.

I'm sure most of you have pranked friend's houses or apartments so they would get a surprise when they get home after the honeymoon.

Here is a good one that is almost impossible to find.

Take a curtain rod down and pull the two halves apart. Put a couple of frozen shrimp inside and put the curtain rod back up.

It will stink for months and they will never, ever find it. Just be kind and tell them where it is after the first night.

Of course you can still fill up the medicine cabinet with rice anyway.

Working in IT, if someone left their computer open we would take a snapshot of their desktop as they left it. We would make the snapshot the background image on their computer and then proceed to move all their desktop icons into a folder and hide it.

People would come back, think their computer had locked up because nothing responded. Watching them click an icon that was just part of a background image was priceless. They would reboot and think their computer had problem. A few rounds of reboots and they would finally get they had been pranked or start asking "any of you have something going on with your PC today?".

Additionally, when working in a paint store in college we would routinely call the store number, get the receptionist and ask for her to page someone who was sent to the store to buy paint. We would say, "yeah, we gave them the wrong color, could you please page them so we can get a hold of them and tell them what color we need to get". She would comply and ask for the name. "uh, my partners last name is Freely, first name Ipee". Then over the intercom we would here... "Call on line one for I pee Freely", followed by a 'click' and many laughs. Of course we got that from watching the Simpsons, and it was before cell phones. Good times.
