Question SC61 does not Display DTS-HD

So a friend of mine asked me for some help setting up his Pioneer SC61 and Pioneer Elite Blu Ray player. Once we got everything hooked up we popped in a blu ray (Avengers) and noticed the receiver displayed PCM rather than DTS-HD MA. I know i set the blu ray player to bitstream so that the decoding would be done through the receiver rather than the player. I did verify the blu ray player was doing the proper 7.1 decoding so I know I"m getting DTS-HD MA but I would like the receiver to display that or better yet my friend would like his receiver to display that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Everything is connected over HDMI.

    Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you've done about everything with the player... it's not set to pcm, and assume there is no audio selection that has to be made for that BD? My manual shows to hit "receiver" on the remote during playback (ensure the player is not on "pause", formats will not show) and see Auto/ALC/Direct. Auto Surround should briefly show on the display, followed by displaying whatever the source is sending, in this case DTS-HD MA. Make sure you verify you are on Auto Surround (believe you also can change this by opening the front panel). If you're in Direct or Pure Direct mode, I'm not positive on this, but you may only be getting stereo. And I'm not sure how smart the SC-61 is when it comes to detecting your speakers. Your friend is running all speakers needed for 7.1? I'm running this AVR and haven't had any issues displaying the formats. These things are so complicated now, just a missed setting here or there can send you for a loop Perhaps some others can chime in here as well with some tips, good luck!

The player is currently doing the decoding so its sending the signal to the receiver and the receiver is outputting 7.1 via the players signal decoding rather than the receiver. I did verify all 7.1 speakers were working while the movie was playing. The BD does have different audio settings but the default is usually the DDTrueHD or DTS-HD MA. The player pop up menu shows DTS-HD MA 7.1 but the receiver still hows PCM. I did attempt to press receiver and set it to Auto to no avail. I'll try again when I see the guy or send him some instructions.

    Thanks

If you're doing the decoding in the BR player the receiver is working right. You'll need to let the receiver do the decoding to get what you want.

The the BR player to bitstream and it should allow the AVR to do the decoding from there. Then hit pure direct on the remote and you should see it come up as DTS HD.

Either Auto Surround or Pure Direct should get you DTS-HD MA at the receiver. Initially you said you were running bit stream from the BD player and letting the receiver decode, but then stated the player is doing the decoding? Like Sherardp stated, make sure you're running bit stream from the player, it sounds like your issue is there not with the receiver.

I'm using HDMI cables. I setup the Blu ray player to bitstream which should have allowed the receiver to decode the DTS-HD MA. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. All I got was PCM. At no point was I able to get the receiver to decode the 7.1 it was the blu ray doing the decoding the whole time (sorry for the confusion). I made sure I was running Bitstream. I am getting sound from all 7 speakers and LFE so I know the receiver knows I have 7.1

Thanks for everyone's response. These Pioneer receivers can be hard to mess with.

I had the same problem until I read deeper into the manual and found the solution. However I can't remember how I fixed it so my comments are totally useless LOL. You will find the fix.

Hmm, another thing you can try with the receiver if you're sure you're getting the DTS-HD MA signal TO the receiver. It's possible the input you are using for the BD player may be set to analog, negating any digital processing. To check, have it on the input you're using. Press "receiver" to get in receiver operation mode. Press SIGNAL SEL for the corresponding input you're using the BDP on. You can cycle through the options, Auto, Analog, Digital, HDMI. If it's set to analog, it won't display the DTS you're looking for, one of the other settings would be preferable (Auto would do it).

The problem is with the player... The player is still configured to do the decoding. You have to set the player audio out to send the native DTS signal out to the AVR.

Alright guys, thanks to everyone who helped and contributed their knowledge to the little issue my friend and I had. We had to dig deeper in the settings of the BD player which was also a Pioneer Elite product (BP62FD) and found that under the HDMI setting there was a bitstream option. So in the case of this BDplayer you have to go both in the audio and hdmi option and choose bitstream.

    Thanks once again guys.

Yeah, you really have to look at that menu with a sharp eye and a fine toothed comb along with reading the manuals like your studying for the Bar exam. Just the way it is these days, the more one piece of gear does the more complicated the setup. Glad you got it figured out anyway.

Remember when nobody could figure out how to set those clocks on the old VCR's, let alone set them to record ? They were always just flashing or turned off.

Don't feel bad oleanon621, I think most of us with older AVR's had the same issue trying to display the DTS HD MA or DD True HD on the AVR display instead of PCM. I remembered when I got my slim PS3 and was able to display this ^ by choosing BITSTREAM as the others have mentioned
