Default Nad 7100 for its phono capability?

Anybody have experiece with these for phono use mainly, im looking at one, the guy is asking 150, it looks nice, he says its been rarely used, and it comes with the weird, oem angled remote.

Will eventually be getting an amp, but for now it will use its 50 watt amp section, or i will hook it up to my denon avr330, or yammy rxv2500.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated

You could certainly do worse. I believe that receiver has essentially the 1600/1700 preamp makeup, which is considered (by myself and others) to acquit itself pretty well, including its phonostage. I'm using a 1600 in my bedroom system and am plenty happy with the job it does with my turntable. Actually, I've got the NAD 2100 amp in that system as well, and I believe the 7100 is supposed to be, essentially, the 1600/2100 in one box.

If you do a search for "NAD 1600 phono" or similar, you'll be able to see what others think, I imagine.

NAD's still got spec sheets/manuals up for it, if you haven't seen them: LINK

The remote by itself sells on ebay for 50-75 bucks, so I think you're not in danger of losing much money if & when you decide to go a different direction. As you can tell, I'm a bit of a fan.

I agree with Jay for the most part...as the 7100 does have a very decent phono stage.
But where we differ is using the 7100 as strictly a phono pre and then hooking it up to another amp/pre/integrated.
The whole more things in the signal path and all that.

If you planned on using it as a 2 channel pre and for its phono stage, then we are changing my opinion. I would be more in line with Jay's views.

But if you are looking for a standalone phono stage to use with existing gear, then I would recommend the following options...

    New:
NAD PP 2i or 3i ($169 and $199 respectively). The 3i adds a line input, 16bit A/D converter and a USB port to allow you to digitize your vinyl recordings.
    Musical Fidelity V-LPS II ($199)

Very budget new but still now bad at all:
ART DJ Pre II ($49 at parts Express) How cheap it is scares people away but if all you need is an inexpensive way to listen to vinyl, this is it and it doesn't sound bad by any means. Definitely battles well above its price.

    Used:
Parasound Z-phono (New it is $350 and I have seen a few show up here and there for $200-$250 used)
Bellari MT502 (New $500 but they show up on ePrey now and then for $150 on up)

Personally, depending on the speakers you are running, the 7100 is a really nice all around package...if you have some reasonably efficient and somewhat warm sounding speakers.

Thanks guys, to be clearer, it will be a 2 channel pre, mainly for phono use.

I always try to look up info, but it seems like everyone who goes to the effort to review their gear loves their gear, unless it breaks or is just awful, so it can be somewhat difficult to really get a clear picture.

You guys have been very helpful, still waiting for a reply from the guy.

That's a different story then. Go for it. I was very happy with my NAD 1020 which has, arguably, a worse phono stage and is still pretty good.

What speakers are you going to be running with it?
