Adcom power amps 545, 555 and their newer ii should be common ground, always check to be sure. I believe the 565 is a mono design and is NOT COMMON GROUND. Others have them here and can chime in. I can't remember if you can strap the grounds together between the 2 mono amps and run them, once again, maybe a 565 owner can chime in. There are tons of threads here dealing with this very issue. Also search for Polk AI-1 or dreadnaught to replace using the interconnect cable on SDA's etc... There are a number of variables involved ,such as model of SDA's type of IC connection ,pin/blade or blade/blade and serial numbers of the set of SDA's . Once again, lots to research ,but the last thing you want is to ruin your amps and speakers by running them the wrong way.

I'm running a 5500 with the ground terminals strapped. It is not common ground.
The 565 monoblocks can be strapped too.

    Looks like you're covered.

Adcoms are pretty neutral in their presentation. I have a couple up here (545, 555). What's important with an Adcom is that you get a good pre-amp. Some of Adcom's own pre-amps are a little grainy and bright up top, only the GFP-750 is a great match for them. Not quite on a par with the 750 but still decent, is the GFA-715.

Other than these two, I'd look elsewhere for a pre-amp to drive my SDAs. Actually, going with a "tube" pre-amp might be a nice combo?

In any case. Adcoms are built like tanks, it's hard to KILL one (and I don't mean the latter multi-channel amps that have had some problems on this site. I mean the old two channel units) and they're a great value for the "money". You have to spend a lot more to move to the next level.

    Have fun.

Boston Randy, the GFA-555II does a superb job of driving the SDA-2Bs. I tried the GFA-545II for a while, but was just not wowed by it. The 555II also does a much better job than the Carver TFM-24/TFM-25 with the 2Bs, IMHO.

Which models are you looking at?

I've got a Adcom GFA-555 matched with an Adcom GFP-710 preamp running a set of SRS 2s. So far I am really liking the combo. I would love to try a GFP-715 or 750 but those are a little out of my budget at the moment.

I have and Adcom GFA-555 and a GFA-545II. Both are common ground. Both sound great with my Adcom GTP-450 preamp and 2Bs. I'm still trying to decide if I like the 545 or the 555 best. The GFA-545 is a little brighter but my old ears seem to like it. The GFA-555 is probably more accurate.

Ran a 555 with thw 2Bs for awhile. A good match for sure. Tried a Parasound and liked the sound a little better. There are a number of excellent choices out there.

There is one listed with a pre for a decent price. If its still here i may jump on it. Im using a Yamaha 2040 now. And it sounds great. But i want to jump up a little into something different & make them sing. Ive always liked Adcom too. Cross my fingers. Thanks for all the info

As some have already said, many good choices out there for amps. I currently run a GFA-555II on my SDA SRS. have run a pair of 545II's and they sounded good also. Just removed a Carver M4.0T SS from my 1.2TL's and am currently using a pair of Marantz 140's. The carver definitely had more power but I cant say it sounded any better. Of course I switched the pre with the amp as well was running a carver C-1 with the 4.0T and am running a Marantz 3250. Am going to switch out and try the 7T with this soon.

Anyway the SDA's are great sounding speakers and sound great with many different amps. They do tend to like power, at least when using solid state amps. The Adcom sounds great with them but so does other gear. Listen to as many set ups as possible and decide what type sound you like. Some prefer tubes while others prefer solid state. Some solid state can sound like a cross of the two to some degree. I would say the vintage Marantz gear I have used falls into this category. the Adcoms are more detailed.

Don't know much about that particular pre, but I will opinionate that almost any of the adcom pre's will sound better with that amp than using a regular mid fi AVR as a pre. Some people may like their upper level Pioneer Elites and high end vintage Marantz's better. I have used an Adcom GTP 450 and felt it did a much better job than my Onkyo 706 AVR. Just try to talk the guy into a good combo price and look for a better pre later if not satisfied with it after trying it for a bit. You can always flip the pre and put that $ towards something else. If you can be lazy like myself, then a remote is always a nice bonus.

Thanks. I look forward to seeing it. I could care less if it has remote. But bonus if it does ? I have only listen to Adcom a few times & they sounded very nice on a bigger sda's than what i have. And if i remember it was a lower wpc Adcom also. They also had a Adcom cd player too if i remember correctly. But they were way over priced on the speakers & the system. So i walked away :( from the place.

Adcom or Carver are historically solid for SDAs for less coin.

    Boston,

I have a really nice GFA-555 I can sell you if you are interested or if the other deal falls through. Its a great amp IMO but I just don't need it right now. It ran my SDA 2A's as well as my current SDA 1C's, just a work horse of an amp but still smooth. PM if you are interested.

Not sure on that particular Pre, Ive heard the GFP-555 and its fine, better than an AVR for sure. Personally, I think the amps are a better deal for the money.

no problem, I hope it works out for you, Local is always good. Let me/us know if you need any advice on the unit, like I said, its a great piece to own. I wish I could keep mine just to have, but it makes no sense, especially if someone else could use it.

    Good luck tomorrow.

Most people here by now know I recently grabbed a pair of SDA-2bs.I already had an Adcom gfa 555 rack face model and can push these speakers w/ enough power to spare .I swear that I have never gone past the 12 0'clock pos on my pre for fear of destroying them. If you have a 555 to me you have clean neutral power and again enough to go around.

Attachment 88116snagged it. I was worried about condition as they said there was a scratch on it. Well its a little one about a half inch or so on right lower front of amp. Easy touch up. I think i should be happy with it. Hope to have it hooked up this weekend. Thanks again everyone. I will update on what i think of it when i do. I think my speakers will be very pleased now :) randy
