    Question Amplifier & Receiver Questions

First off I own a Denon 3808ci receiver. I am going to be buying the Emotiva XPA-5 here shortly. I plan on using my Denon Receiver for the surround rear channels. So.....here are my questions, and remember I have never used external amps before.
    1. So when I send the signal via the pre-amp out terminals of the Denon Receiver the internal amplifiers shut off for the channels that are sent to the Emotiva amp?
    2. Since I will be using only two surround rear channels of the receiver the rear surrounds will be getting the full 130 wpc as stated in the manual, i.e. with two channels driven?
    3. Is there any way ( or any reason to ) to use the Denon receiver front channel amplifier to power the surround rear? I think I read that they provide 140 wpc with only two channels driven.

Again noob questions here, but I have just been thinking about it.

    Thanks again,

Probably not. When I used my Sony 7100ES as a pre, it still got hot even though none of the amps had a load.

    Most likely.

Depends. If your Bluray is doing the decoding and connects to the AVR via analog cables then hook the rear cables to the front inputs. If you are using HDMI to connect to the AVR then you probably have to live with how the AVR decodes the channels, unless there is an option to assign channels to specific amps..

I don't believe they will shut off the internal amps. They will just not have any load connected. A way to test this is hook up the XPA to the Pre-outs and also connect a Multi-Meter set to AC Autoranging and see you you still have voltage coming out of the left or right mains speaker terminals on the AVR.

    Yes

    That is the way the user guide reads: 130 W + 130 W (8 Ω/ohms, 20 Hz ~ 20 kHz with 0.05 % T.H.D.)

With HDMI each channel is receiving it's own discrete signal and the AVR routes accordingly. You will have to wire off the rear surrounds. It's only a 10 watt difference. You won't notice so there is nothing to gain.

    Randy,

Probably be in the next couple of weeks. I will post back. As part of the deal the wife gets a new painted family room and kitchen, that along with upgraded diamond earings. This amp may be more trouble than it is worth! :)
