    Default monitor 10b

Hello everyone, I'm new to the site so I figured of post my vintage setup. I have a pair of monitor 10b's connected to a pioneer sx-535 20watt receiver, I recently picked up the speakers on cl for dirt cheap, they sound amazing except for one of the 6503's being stuck but ill be ordering a new one asap. I currently have them sitting on a milkcrates until I have time to build them a proper stand.
Can anyone advise on a decent receiver to push these to their full potential?

    Welcome!
Those are very nice speakers but 20w is very low power.
At least get something with 100 wpc.
    Adcom, Parasound, Carver etc...
    Wait for more suggestions.

If you want it to look exactly the same as the good ones you all have to find one used.
To give them the full potential you might as well get 300 WPC.

Thanks for the quick replies! I found a set of the 6503's with almost the same mfg date(within a couple month's) so hopefully they will match up nicely. Do you recommend the crossover upgrade on these? Or should I put my money into a better receiver?

Both are needed and well worth the money spent. The old ancient caps are probably almost bad by now

    Congratulations!

The rabbit hole is deep with Polk Monitors - crossover refresh, dynamat on the PRs and woofers, new tweeters, stands, re-seal the PRs and woofers with mortite or armacell, etc etc etc.

The first thing I would do is use some JB Weld to glue your magnets in place so you don't lose any more woofers. Then crossovers.

As far as amps go, the sky's the limit but I wouldn't spend hundreds on new amplification until you spend $5 on some JB weld and then maybe up to $100 on crossover upgrades. The Monitor 10s are relatively efficient (89db/watt/m) so you don't need huge watts to get them going. If you like vintage Pioneers, shoot for 60 watts and above - that's likely the SX-8xx series and above (828/929, 850.950, 880/980)

When I had my monitor 10s with RDO-194s however I found that they were much more fun with more modern equipment. I had a Harmon Kardon 3380 with 80 wpc which really got them going. You can find those on CL for about $100. They sound great.

    Have fun!

I was so impressed with my XO upgrade that I wished I had done it sooner; I didn't mess with anything else (internally) except replace my old SL2000 tweets with RDO-194's (very nice). I don't even use stands: I use something called "tip toes" (which are similar to spikes on a carpet--just not permanent). Enjoy them!

are you looking to stay vintage receive 2 channel? Or to newer receivers ? The 10's need a tad bit of power. As stated above id agree on the 60wpc or more. i am powering mine with a vintage receiver also. I have NOT done upgrades. Last on my list. But sound wonderful. if you decide to keep that Pioneer try hooking some Monitor 5 or 5jr+ 's to that. You will be amazed at the sound. I have a little Sansui G2000 18 wpc and youd swear it was a BIG ARS system that fills a fairsize room no problem on stands & sounds awesome.good luck with search. Keep us updated & WELCOME.
