    Smile Sda srs 1.2tl

Is there any way to know if the posts in the back of the speaker are working correctly? My speakers were not used for YEARS and I am afraid that oxidation may have begun. The right channl speaker is weaker that the left. Especially in the high range. But the tweeters "Seem" to be working. They are the Polk SDA SRS 1.2tl. I would like to get the crossover board checked but dont know where to go. The local electronic repair shop guy looked lost when i talked to him so I definitiely am not taking it there...LOL SHould I start taking out screws and looking around? I dont want to start something and end up with pieces of speaker that I am unable to put back together :)

Either the polyswitch has failed or you have toasted a tweeter or more. Start with swapping the 3rd tweeter from the top with the same from the other speaker. If the right speaker now sounds correct then you have a bad tweeter. If it still sounds off then I would suspect a bad polyswitch.

Not to hijack but if you do the Vr3 x-over upgrade does that eliminate the polyswitch? I am about to purchase the upgrade and just curious.

The tweeters are line source all play in the lower range then they start shutting off as the freq goes up

This will answer most of your questions Polk SDA Handbook

I will tell u that you that my 2.3tls have lost two tweeters and one MW6510 in there lifetime but the
crossover was okay just old and outdated. Empty paper towel roll works great for a quick by ear tester.

Thanks to all for the quick replys. The difference in sound from let to right is pretty obvious. It "seems" that at least two of the tweeters are working (I will try the paper towel roll technique tonight). Does getting the crossover mods evaluated / checked / fixed cost a lot :) I am not floating in money but if the cost is reasonable I would certainly get it done. Also, when it comes to switching tweeters, is it reletively simple (i.e., 4 screws and a quick disconnect of a wire or two) or does it involve some deep understanding of electronics. To answer Deadof_knight' question, at any volume and or frequency there is quite a difference. One speaker sounds "alive" the other will produce good base and midrange but bad on the high range...This even though it seems at least one of the tweets is working fine. SOmetimes it is hard to dicern where the high range sounds are coming from (midrange or tweeter). Again, thanks for the responses. I will test them again tonight. Hope I am answering these posts correctly BTW. I used the "Post Quick Reply" command button.

Just pull a tweeter, and you will realize how easy it is, pull the crossover plate as well there is nothing to it.

It's easier then changing the tire on a car, it don't take long to figure it out.

Also on my 1.2 the positive and negative binding posts per the sticker on the back of the speaker was incorrect. I just found this out after owning them for years. Check your speaker cable and make sure your polarity is correct.

Pulling the tweeters is very easy.

When removing the crossover plate, only remove the 8 outer bolts. If you remove the single middle bolt, the crossover will fall off and smash into the passive radiator below!

I will try to look at the tweeters and the crossover plate. As far as the binding posts are concerned I will check that also. How would I know if they are wrong...I guess there would be no or little output due to this. As far as the crossover plate is concerned, thanks for the info on the middle screw LOL, that IS a useful tip. Tonight will be a busy one.

Sound will improve. Switching them around will cause no harm. The positive/red will be on the left and negative/black on the right.

It was only the 1.2's, not the 1.2TL's that had to red and black caps reversed.

Jesse, Was any explanation ever given to the fact that Polk's color code is just about reversed in the low voltage universe. When I was installing house security systems red was alway + and black was always negative and if CAT-5 was used the solid wire conductor was the positive and stiped was neg. It made sense was taught like that in all the companies I worked for and never varied. If you used a different legend and was noted in the panel and back in the alarm panel then it was ok.

Yes, they choose to use the high voltage color code.

I should add to this. The SDA SRS is suppose to have the red on the right, black on left.
