Default Using a CR 1020 as a Pre Amp

Looking for advise for using a Yamaha CR 1020 receiver as a pre amp with an Adcom 555 amp. Do I just plug the Adcom into the Yamaha pre out and go?

I'm not sure about the CR's but I'm just relaying what I know about my CA. There is a switch on the back to seperate the internal pre from the amp.

That is what I am not sure about. There is a Main in On/Off switch but I am not sure if that needs to be switched off.

I have a CR-840, I believe you'll need to complete the loop and set the switch to on.

OK Thanks. Will plug the Adcom in and see what happens. According to the owners manual for the 1020, it says the signal from the pre amp section goes to the amplifier section and the pre out terminals and is available to go to another amplifier regardless of the main in switch being in the on or off position.

I reckon the previous post is indeed accurate (I've never actually tried running the preamp of my CR-1020 to a separate power amp).

FWIW, I wouldn't set my expectations too high for the CR-1020's preamp... not that they're bad (far from it) but not designed as "separates quality", and the preamp/tuner section will not be performing at its best with three-plus decades old passive components if it has had no restoration.

Also - and strictly FWIW - I am somewhat skeptical that the Adcom would represent much of a sonic improvement over the power amp of a 1020 (again, assuming that the latter is in good tune).

For the OP's benefit (in case you don't have one already) the CR-1020 manual's available at: http://sportsbil.com/yamaha/cr-1020-om.pdf

Thanks for the input.I do in fact have the original owners manual. My motivation for using a separate amp is for more power. I want to run some RTA 12's and don't think the 1020 at 70 watts @ 8 ohms will do them justice. The Adcom is rated at 200 watts @ 8 ohms and 325 @ 4 ohms. I will be looking for a pre amp for the Adcom but until then I am looking for an alternative. I did pick up a CR 2020 over the weekend from the original owner that is in pristine condition. Original box etc. That is rated at 105 watts @ 8 ohms so that is an option.

200 watts is 4.6 dB more than 70 watts and 105 watts is roughly 1.8 dB more than 70... but there is more to good sound than absolute power output. I reckon you already knew that if you were collecting vintage Yamaha electronics ;-)

    The 2020's a nice piece, too :-)

Guess you need to find a CR-3020, though! ;-)

Ha. That is what I told my wife last night. But I think finding a CR 3020 will cost me a bit of money. Some one local around me has a Pioneer sx 1980 for sale - $3000. Good Luck with that one. I will keep my eyes open for the 3020.....never know.

... I'd rather have the Yamaha... the multicolor disco lights on the 1980 are just too much for even my severely compromised aesthetic sense ;-)
