    Default 2s vs. 2As

One of these days I'm going to acquire a pair of SDAs, but not today. Anyhow I see two pairs available in my area, both for $200. If my research is correct one pair are 2As with an SL2000 and a pin blade i/c, the other pair are 2s with SL1000s. Which do you think would be the better choice?

    2As with an SL2000 and a pin blade i/c
2A's never came with the pin/blade SDA cable, only blade/blade. If they are pin/blade they have to be 2B's and you should buy them today.

That is a pin-blade crossover; and the SDA 2A/B speakers are nice for the size.

Ok so I guess they are 2Bs. Seller claims they are wood veneer not vinyl. Does that sound right? They look very similar to the studios but with a wood grain. Also besides new caps what mods would be require or recommended? Would it be a good idea to change the tweets or are the SL2000 ok?

Can't comment on wood veneer vs. vinyl except to say that Polk was famous for doing small runs with whatever they had on hand. You're on the right track with replacing the caps and resistors. It's definitely recommended to replace the SL2000's with RD0-194's. The latter is temporarily out of stock from Polk right now, but should be available in a few weeks. When you call to place the order tell them you're a CP member for a discount and free shipping.

Buy them now before someone else does. Concern yourself with upgrades after you get them.

Not as familiar with the studio versions. I believe there were studios with real wood veneer. Or are you saying they are not studios and have the real wood caps on them? By your statement, I am guessing the latter, but those wood caps are real wood, and not veneer at all.

If you do a search, you can find how to do all kinds of mods to the 2B's. You can "TL" them by adding a 5.6uF cap to the crossover. And, it is very highly recommended that you redo the crossovers with new caps and resistors. More of us are redoing the inductors as well (but this would be a later mod (IMO)). If, and only if you do the "TL" mod to the 2B's, you can replace thwe tweeters with the RD0-198 tweeters. This is what I, and most members recommend. If you do not do the "TL" mod, you can still replace the SL2000's with the RD0-194 tweeter. Either of these tweeters make the SL2000 tweeter sound like trash (actually, the SL2000 does a good jub of sounding like trash on its own).

You can also add Larry's rings (to couple the drivers to the baffle(s)) which is an extrememly worthwhile mod. You can dynamat the driver/PR baskets. You can add some blackhole 5 to the inside walls of the 2B's to improve midrange.

Those are the must do mods off the top of my head. There are a few others as well. If you do all the mods, the 2B's will sound absolutely phenominal! The 2B was my first SDA speaker and I still own them (although I don't use them to much). They are a great speaker! I hope this helps you out.....

    Bottom line is, BUY THEM!

A couple of things my friend....

but those wood caps are real wood, and not veneer at all.
The end caps on 2B's are veneered.

You can "TL" them by adding a 5.6uF cap to the crossover.
That should be a 5.8uF cap.

LOL! Thanks Jesse. Totally F'd those up didn't I? (Note to self: Always check your facts. Always.)

I didn't realise they were veneered on the 2B's. I knew the 3.1TL's were (veneered), but thought the thicker wood caps on the 2B were fully oak, etc. which is why they are so much heavier? Thanks for the correction.

Man, this is starting to get to me. I figured what I thought were 2As was the better deal, but I didn't think it was that good of a deal. I was planning on being more patient and waiting for something better. I'm dropping major coin on a HVAC system this week and I don't think I can swing it. Am I standing next to that rabbit whole thing? anyhow, they look like these but with a light wood grain.

Not that I was questioning you said Jesse. I looked at my 2B's and sure enough. Veneered. My memory of it was true wood. As I said, always check those facts. Thanks for the correction Jesse.

Edit: ^^^^^OP: Those are studio 2B's^^^^^

The ones in your pic are 2A's, but someone has removed the 2 inch riser. The Studio 2B's have a 1 inch riser and only came in vinyl.

I would get them while they are there. At least talk to the seller maybe give a deposit and have them hold them. That is the best sounding SDA of all that I have heard (IMO)( and I have heard most models) and it is a great price. Or put the HVAC off another week or so....
