    Default Sony MDR1R Headphones

Ok...I know these are priced right outta nowhere however, the local Sony stores are flogging them for $220 CDN...I took a listen with my iPhone in store, anyone hear them thru a receiver or some sort of real amp...and opinions please, all taken either yay or nay opinions.

If the Sennheiser Momentum are too small for your ears then these are a great option. I think the Momentum edges out the Sony for pure sound quality (and I imagine Tyll would agree), but the Momentum don't fit everyone properly and if you fall into that category then these are the next best option. If you're looking for a really warm laid back sound they may not be your cup of tea though, if you want that check out the UE cans by Logitech.

I'm kind of limited to what I can get in my local area, heard the Logitechs but wasn't impressed with the sound, the Momentums were unwearable with my glasses on...the MDR1R's fit nice and sound good (only headphones yet that my iPhone can go full tilt on), just trying to replace my broken HD477's :(

    Welcome to Club Polk!

That's not a bad price for the Sonys and, as mentioned, the reviews have been good even as compared to the Momentums!

    Looks like you've already decided?

Well since you've heard the Momentum, I'll use them for a quick comparison:

The MDR1R are more comfortable, they have larger ear pads and just fade away as soon as you put them on.

The Momentum have a better build quality with premium materials. The Momentum are leather and metal, and even the plastic is a very high quality glass filled plastic. The Sony by comparison feel alot more 'plasticky'. They don't feel cheap, but next to the Momentum the difference in quality and feel is obvious.

The Momentum has a more neutral, 'audiophile' sound to it and will provide a more faithful reproduction of the recording. The MDR1R in comparison I find to have a more bass tilt and warmer sound overall, it just sounds thicker overall.

Congrats! But back the loudness off if you value your hearing. I know if I play my phones over 85 db for even a few minutes my ears RING for hours!

cnh...LOL I only had em painfully loud for a few moments, they sounds great loud (outside of painful) or moderate.

nguyendot, Problem is where I live there are few (2-3) places that might even carry something like that and if they do...the price is gonna be astronomical, I'm now broke as I also brought the HK 3490 home on the say dang day...darn close to $800 spent ! Right now it's time to focus on finding a quality extension cord...so I'm not chained within 3 feet of the receiver...ugh !

I don't know any places locally that sell them, I just read the reviews and order them online. I got an Aune T1 for very cheap on the last MassDrop and have been very happy with it.

Had the O2, pass on it. Look on head-fi in their for sale section. It's of good amps there normally at decent prices.

Look at something like a JDSLabs CMOY. Small portable an very good in the budget

You don't really need much of an amp with those Sony. They will of course benefit to some extent, but they're not super demanding headphones.

I kinda figured that out when my idiotic iPhone could drive them to full volume without an issue, but the thing is...I've now been bit by the audiophile bug...yep...bit hard now. No more $50 speakers...no more $100 receivers, no more "It's wire...it's good enough"
