Default This should have been on SNL

I've seen the same headline a half dozen times now. "WWII vets storm the Memorial".

The first time I read that head line, I just started laughing. Seems one of those Honor Flights took a group of WWII vets to D.C. for a tour on the first day of the Gov't shutdown, and they decided to visit the closed World War II memorial. They had some help from a few politicians with the barricade, but went on in. Seems the Park Police have no direction on how to deal with this situation.

I've never been in law enforcement, but in the military the term closed meant no admittance. Seems like some kind of guidance to me, but what do I know. The article also said the Park Police reminded other visitors that the memorial was closed.

I know that a guy in his 70's, piloting one of those motorized scooters at 3 miles in hour, coming directly at you can be pretty intimidating. Especially if he has a few dozen people using walkers backing him up, and maybe a cane swinger or 2, but come on.

Personally I'm glad that these vets decided that they could care less if the memorial was closed. I just think it makes a funny visual.

I wish my Grandfather was still alive to hear this, he served and I know I could not post his response here. It is a shame that he and others fought for the freedom of the fools we have in charge now! I miss ya Gramps thanks for serving!

This was the best story of the day.... and it was that same spirit and determination that took the beaches of countless Pacific Islands, and the European Continent from the tyranny of evil. I salute them all.

Did anyone happen to see that group Acrade Fire, Reflektor !! I thought it was just awesome. The whole group was just spazzing out all quirky and stuff and the music was so weird that you just wanted to turn it up as it had a totally 80's electro vibe

My father in law and brother in law went on that flight two weeks ago out of Lacrosse. Wi. It is a great nonprofet to support. We are loosing WWII vets every day. We honored the 91 vets when they came back to the hanger with a celebration. It was a great day. One we as a family will never forget! Peace. D

They deserve to go to the White House and demand a tour of the place, see what the administration thinks of that. God Bless all those who served in the armed forces.

I had the same response last night when I first saw this, but I didn't have the heart! After a few minutes I realized PFB had NOT read the original post but saw the SNL in the thread title flash before his less than palpable consciousness as he posted that!

I started this thread, because when I read the headline, I could actually see these elderly gentlemen just pushing past security at the WWII memorial. I've met, and talked to many of these brave men. I've met men who flew, or crewed B-17's, B-27's, and even B-25's. For those of you unfamiliar with these planes, let's just say they flew to not very nice places. I've met Men who flew piston engine planes against Migs in Korea, and even met a Wild Weasel driver. Those men that flew Wild Weasel missions are either the bravest people I've ever met, or just this side of insane.

I was aboard the ship that shot the first Tomahawk at sea, and actually met a gentleman that was on the design team. I remember seeing something that didn't exist off the coast of Panama, first combat mission of the stealth fighter, but of course if it didn't exist, I couldn't have possibly seen it. Just my imagination I guess.

I've met many people who crawled through mud, sand, and waded through water to fight for some peace of ground, up to and including Iraq and Afghanistan. I've met people who did the same in some place that never existed. I actually met a helo driver that hovered about 5 miles from an Arclight mission. Not a very smart thing to do.

I've noticed that these people have one thing in common. They never brag. If you don't know how to ask the right questions, all they will say is I did my job, or my duty. I think whomever is making the decision about what is essential and non-essential should seriously consider re-evaluating his/her priorities.

To tell you the truth, I'm actually more saddened than upset at the closing of so many memorials. Not the fact that they are closed, but because more people aren't upset about their closure. I guess in these technologically advanced times we live in you can just Google it, to see it. Problem is you'll never be able to ask the F-105 driver what it was like to go downtown.

My mistake, I mistyped. Meant B-29. He said he was a radioman that flew toward the end of the war. Believe he mentioned Dresden in his story. It didn't sound like a fun place to be.

Slight derail, but does anyone know how to get records from that time?
My father served in subs for the first 2 years, and tin cans the second 2. My brother has his medals, but I'd like to see just what campaigns he was in. I know he was at Okinawa, but other than that....?
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!
