Default Adcom 5800, might be able to get one...

Would it be a good buy and what's the maximum I should pay for one ? Kind of tinkering with the idea of turning the 3490 into a pre-amp for it til I can find a better one but...if the price is right should I jump on this amp, for use with my RTiA7s....?

For the money I'd probably look elsewhere, like parasound.

As long as the fans work properly it's a helluva an amp. No need to look at Parasound. I wouldn't pay more than $500-550 for one.

Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. I was expecting them to be a few bills higher. I've also read that they can be difficult and expensive to repair if certain components go bad in them. Haven't heard any real complaints about performance though.

eh...just scouring the local CL ads is all, someone has a pair of 5800s but no price sent an email, found a few triple 5s too, but 250wpc if I can get it reasonably priced would drive the living hell out of the Polks. At least I think so and if the price is right.

Hrm been emailing the guy with the HCA-1200 amps...says I can have two for $700 CAD local sale...worth it to turn the 3490 into a pre only to feed both and bi-amp the RTiA7s ?

That'd be 200 watts a side, per half tower...800 watts total continuous. Too much or ?

With future plans of course to aquire a proper pre-amp later on and repurpose the 3490...

I'd suggest getting your room right first. That's low cost and will pay bigger dividends. It will also make those future upgrades stand out MUCH more than they would otherwise.

Just out of curiosity...what's the difference between the 5800 and the 5802 (aside from fan)? They're both Pass-designed MOSFET amps, aren't they? Always wondered if the 5802 had the sort of sound that I like in Parasound MOSFET amps.

Neither are common ground so most SDA's out of the question unless you use A1 or dreadnaught. 5802 has better closer matched Hex-mosfet. Google it a lot of stuff out there on these....

I called Adcom today about my GFA-5800 powering (new to me) SDA-2a's.
Adcom tech service looked at the schematic and said it was common ground?!
