No, for me it sounds a little better with the grills off. This applies to LSi15s, PSB Synchrony One, and Aerial Acoustic 7T. They all are a bit more clear and focused with the grills off. Whether I have my eyes open or closed, it sounds better. I agree grills can provide some protection, and keep the dust off, but neither is that big a deal to justify not having them perform best.

No. If you look at diffraction and study its effects, you will learn why this can be the case. Imaging and the perceived perception thereof is the single most biggest factor of what the grills throw off for me. On my particular type of speakers, they have always sounded much better with the grills gone and as F1nut has previously stated elsewhere......"makes you want to close your eyes".

The best way to enjoy digital music reproduction is to never listen to good analogue reproduction.

I do close my eyes if listening to just music, but I play a lot of Blu-ray concerts which require some optical participation. The other night, I locked the door and held my speakers under a bright lamp. Eventually they cracked, and yelled "Stop grilling me!!" I didn't listen, they're still covered.

I'm a grills on type. Keep 'em dust free. But this thread made me realize - I've been checking out the KEF Q Series speakers. I've never seen a photo of them with grills. I wonder if they even come with them.

The first time I pulled the grill off one of mine my little one walked over and pushed in the dust cap. They stay on now.

Personal preference thing; though some manufacturers spec their speakers for frequency response specifically with the grills on--so that would be something important to know.
