    Default sunfire vs McIntosh help

I have posted this also in the Mcintosh section on audiokarma but no answers yet.

I have a Sunfire sig II 625x2 gone through and re-capped by Rolland. While it honestly sounds darn good I am always swapping gear. I will say it has lasted the longest in my system. I am looking at a Mcintosh mc7270. Has anyone heard this amp? Or ever hear this and a sunfire?

I actually had the sunfire 300x2, sig ii625x2, adxom 555 all at the same time. The sig 625 sounded to me better. Warm like the mcintosh 2105 but much cleaner, tighter bass, mids were cleaner and highs were sharp without being harsh. The soundstage on the 625 was also much wider.

How do you think a McIntosh 7270 would do against the sig? Rest of the system, dh labs cables all around, ar sp16 preamp with 1959 tungsol tubes, w4s dac2, cayin tube sacd running 60's mullard, Legacy Focus speakers.

I would have to go Sunfire here... I love the Mac's, but the Sig 625 is just on another level. The only reason I gave mine up is that my tube amps are just that much sweeter. It would take a Pass Labs 600wpc set of monoblocks for me to consider giving up that Sunfire if I had it back...

I'm a Mac fan but those with sunfire experience may know better on this one. I know Sunfire has a great reputation , so does Mac. Its hard to tell without hearing both on your system.

Thanks John. I will hang onto the sig for now. You know how it is, every once in a while you just get the bug. Now if I found a deal on the McIntosh 402.... lol.

If you do decide to move the Sunfire, remember I have dibs. It would be perfect for my center channel.

You got it! This hobby is crazy for sure. It's not that I am unhappy with the sunfire at all. You just sometimes get the itch to change and I am a sucker for moving VU's!. As a kid, radio shack used to sell a VU add-on.The sig II was a huge difference vs the regular sunfire 300X2 that I had and when it came back from Rolland, it was even tighter.

I have been reading about the McIntosh 352 and 402 but both are in the $4000 range. For that $, I think there is better or as good out there for less money.

    Earn,
I would keep the Sunfire.....sure there are better amps out there but will cost a lot more to beat it. If you have some change burning a hole in your pockets, maybe look at replacing the mid woofers in the Legacy's with a newer version and have Trey do the crossovers. Have you seen the crossover mods Trey does on Legacys ? The original Focus are getting up there in age too so just a thought.

Tonyb, ya know I never thought about swapping out the mids. On the web, I heard a demo between the 2 mids and even via the web I could hear the difference. hummmmmmmmmm..... Thanks for putting that thought into my brain!

It's a tough call, but I would lean towards the Sunfire only because it's been recently serviced. Although, if you can stretch your budget a little more, MC-352 should be a no brainer compared to the other two. http://app.audiogon.com/listings/sol...ndianapolis-in

Love that place. Its where I got my 1.2 sda and the 2105 I had from. Nice people to deal with!

Face the 352 and 402 are the other 2 amps I was thinking of actually if I change amps.
