    Default AVR with Audyssey DSX

    Hi Everyone

Moving into my new place soon! I'm trying to decide between AVR that feature Audyssey DSX

Reviews I've researched have tended to favor the Onkyo 5010 over the Denon 4520. I'm going to do the full 11.1. I have a great Sunfire amp I bought from Nooshinjohn. I'd like to use it to power my center, rt, lt and wide speakers, then use the AVR to power the remaining 6 speakers and sub for the full 11.1

    Is this possible?

Yes, that is possible. What reviews are you seeing that the Onkyo favors the Denon? Personally, I'd take the Denon over the Onkyo, but I tend the favor the Denon since I currently have the 4520 and it works and sounds awesome! Audyssey XT32 and the ability to calibrate dual subs, is the icing on the cake...

P.S. that amp you have is very special. I am regretting not buying it instead of my 60" plasma . I bet it makes your setup shine!

I saw a review where the writer was a big Onkyo guy, and had the Onkyo 5010. He reviewed the Denon 4520, and after the review, liked it so much he decided to stick with it instead of his beloved Onkyo!

I saw a couple of reviews that said approximately the same thing: Sang the praises of the Denon, but said that it fell a bit short as far as punch and attack compared to rival receivers.

Of course, with the Sunfire running the front 5 speakers, maybe this isn't even an issue???

Thanks for you responses guys. They certainly help.

Isn't the Onkyo 5010 capable of going 11.4? That would sound awesome :0

It certainly would be, but the extra subs would probably start to strain my budget a bit. I still have to order a bunch of furniture, etc. as well. I have a pretty big sub already...SVS PBS 12/2. I think that should be fine for now...If anything, maybe if I find a good price on another SVS, I'd consider it. But four of them?

If I got 4, maybe I'd organize a listening session, slip in The Hurt Locker Blu ray, crank it up and see who can stay in the room the longest. :)

Yeah, the 5010 is 11.4 capable.

To the OP, have you considered the 3010? It pretty much has everything the 5010 has minus 5wpc. It has 11.4 pre-outs and XT32 with sub EQ also, you just don't pay as much.

THIS. I was in the same conundrum when my 1007 died and ended up going with an open box 3010 from OneCall through Amazon... and I've been very happy. It even has the full factory warranty. You're looking at a ridiculously good AVR for under $1,500 that can do everything you need, and my "open box" unit didn't look like it had ever been opened. It's certainly in mint condition if it was. Full disclosure: I got a bad Audyssey mic with it, but Onkyo had a new one out to me very quickly.
    Equipment list:
    Onkyo TX-NR3010 9.2 AVR
    Emotiva XPA-3 amp
Polk RTi70 mains, CSi40 center, RTi38 surrounds, RTi28 rears and heights

    DarbeeVision DVP5000 video processor

Awesome! Thanks Geoff and Kuntasensei The other AVR I was considering was the Denon 4520. I don't have any brand loyalty either way. I had a question about reliability, so called 3 different installers in the area. None of them stated any difference in reliability between the two brands.

I'm looking into the KEF Q Series speakers. The guy gave me a fantastic prices on them. He also carries Denon. I'll see if he can beat the price on the Onkyo 3010.

    Thanks Again.

LC I am VERY jealous of you. The KEF's have me pretty interested, specifically the Q900's, however they are unobtainable to me for various reasons. I look forward to your thoughts.

Thanks, ES. I am lucking into some good deals, for sure. But luck is all perspective and it's about time some good luck started coming my way.
A couple of years ago, I started acquiring equipment for the house I'd buy some day...Never thought it would be 3 years before that happened. I helped a friend move from Los Angeles to Texas as an excuse to take a road trip there to buy a set of SRT that someone was selling on Craigslist.
I was renting a room from a friend, and if he would've just cleared some of his stuff out of the room, I could've fit everything in the room I was renting. He's a bit eccentric. He convinced me to put it in a public storage unit.
Long story, short...They got stolen. Along with a set of rt2000 which included cs1000 and fx/1000. They were mint. And also a few other odds and ends.

All in all when you figure in the cost for the storage unit, the cost in gas and hotels... never mind the time and energy investment...I was out 8 grand.

And I never got to even listen to any of them.

So if a little big of luck is trickling my way, forgive me if I feel like I deserve it.

Thanks again for everyone's guidance and opinions. Maybe I can finagle a group discount for all Polkies interested in the KEF Q's. :)

Haven't heard the Denon but very happy with my Onkyo 3010 for video upscaling, calibration and 11.4 output.

FWIW the local installer that sold me my Totems won't touch Onkyo/Integra with a 10ft pole at this point. He has a garage full of Integra Pres and Onkyo receivers pulled from customers homes after they went kaput. Maybe they've fixed a lot of issues they've had of late but it'd be a little too risky for my hard earned dollars. He's replaced most of them with Arcam, Anthem, and NAD units.

No doubt, Onkyo has had more than it's fair share of HDMI failures. Another FWIW, my 807 was one year out of warranty when my HDMI board failed and they did a one time out of warranty fix for me. The only thing I paid was one way shipping within the same state as me. Free fix and free shipping back to me.

One of the installers I spoke to said the same about current Onkyo's, except that he thinks they've fixed the issues.

Denon? I seriously doubt I will ever use 4 subs.

    ? on Audyssey:

"Recently, David A. Rich, of Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity, has shown evidence that the Marantz AV8801—and likely every other model that includes Audyssey software—downsamples all higher-resolution signals to 24/48. While Audyssey itself does not downsample high-rez signals, the MIPS required to process 24-bit/192kHz data would effectively quadruple the load placed on the host pre-pro and, of course, increase its cost. The decision to downsample, therefore, is left to the pre-pro manufacturer."
