    Default MW6500?? No more??

Talked to Dan in Customer Service and he said there was no Polk alternative to replace one of my MW6500 drivers from my Monitor 10's? I was surprised as I thought at least he could recommend an alternate driver......... not so. Not much help from Dan at Polk. Would anyone have suggestions on replacement? I read on the forum the 6503 replaces the 6500? Comments appreciated.

I've serviced Monitor 10s with 6500s, 6501, and 6503s. Your best bet would be eBay for a replacement, unless you want to change all four to 6503s.

I believe the 6501 looks pretty close in spec followed by the 6503.

    Driver: MW 6500 Driver's model #.
    Brand: Polk Driver's brand name.
Fs: 31.0000 Hz (Free air resonance)
    Vas: 2.6486 ft^3 (Compliance volume)
    Qts: 0.2190 Total Q
    Qms: 1.3000 Mechanical Q
    Qes: 0.2640 Electrical Q
    Sd: 0.0130 M^2 (Piston area)
Xmax: 3.1800 mm (Cone excursion, linear)
    Revc: 6.5000 ohms (DC resistance)
    Znom: 8.0000 ohms (Nominal impedance)
Pmax: 35.0000 watts maximum rated power

    Driver: MW 6501 Driver's model #.
    Brand: Polk Driver's brand name.
Fs: 31.0000 Hz (Free air resonance)
    Vas: 2.7545 ft^3 (Compliance volume)
    Qts: 0.2790 Total Q
    Qms: 1.4700 Mechanical Q
    Qes: 0.3440 Electrical Q
    Sd: 0.0130 M^2 (Piston area)
Xmax: 3.1800 mm (Cone excursion, linear)
    Revc: 7.7500 ohms (DC resistance)
    Znom: 8.0000 ohms (Nominal impedance)
Pmax: 35.0000 watts maximum rated power

    Driver: MW 6503 Driver's model #.
    Brand: Polk Driver's brand name.
Fs: 29.8600 Hz (Free air resonance)
    Vas: 3.0017 ft^3 (Compliance volume)
    Qts: 0.3100 Total Q
    Qms: 1.7680 Mechanical Q
    Qes: 0.3760 Electrical Q
    Sd: 0.0130 M^2 (Piston area)
Xmax: 3.1800 mm (Cone excursion, linear)
    Revc: 6.5400 ohms (DC resistance)
    Znom: 8.0000 ohms (Nominal impedance)
Pmax: 35.0000 watts maximum rated power

If you keep the speakers symetrical (ie. 6500 and 6501 in one and 6501 and 6500 in the other) they should sound fine.

The only problem I see with the 6501, is the DCR is much higher than the 6500. I still believe your best option is finding a 6500 on eBay, or four 6503s. The cabinet volume and PR will easily deal with the slight VAS and FS differences with the 6503s. The DCR difference between the 6500 and 6501 may significantly alter the crossover frequency.

That's a tough one and I think you're right: the DCR is very important in this instance. It basically means you have an "all or nothing" scenario for replacing a bad driver. Hope I never have to face that one!
