    Default SVS SB13 ultra

After almost a month of waiting and several weather delays in shipping my svs sb13 ultra finally arrived. First off this thing is damn impressive! But I have a few questions and was hoping other svs owners could chime in. I performed auto calibration though my harman kardon avr 7550hd (also called Ez Set/eq). And further tweaked the settings in my avr as per the svs manual.... which are:
    - sub trim to -3db
    - sub woofer level set to 0db
The volume level in the integrated function controller on the sub itself has to be set fairly high around -2db 0r -3db (on a scale of -100 to 0). The sub sounds GREAT, and blends really well with my speakers. Is this volume setting too high? What do others have theirs set to? I know these settings will vary for room size and equipment variations etc. Any suggestions and help is always appreciated, thank you.

Are you saying that you have to increase the gain/volume of the built-in amplifier volume control all the way too 100% to blend it in?? I'd say then that either your receiver subwoofer signal level is too low, or your room needs treatment, or the most basic - your sub position in the room is incorrect.

I have managed to figure this problem out. The auto setup feature for my Harman Kardon receiver just plain blows. I tried multiple
subwoofer locations, and re-ran the auto setup dozens of times. I ended up purchasing an spl meter, re-setting the receiver to factory defaults and starting from scratch. I did talk to the guys at svs and they told me it is not unusual to run the gain on the subwoofer as high as -5. I have trim and sub volume in my avr set to 0 and gain the the svs to -10. I like a bit of base and ran the svs a little hotter than the other channels. I also have moved into a house with a dedicated theater room, so it took quite a bit of
positioning and experimentation, I have it almost perfect now :)

I haven't tried it, but have been thinking about giving it a go. I have been pretty interested in a Velodyne SMS-1 after my second ultra comes in. any recommendations?

I have SMS-1 and would highly recommend it, with one caveat - it only does a total room response, it will not calibrate subs individually. Only Audyssey MultiEQ XT32 equipped controllers will do so. If you can score SVS AS-EQ1, it will calibrate your subs individually, then do the total room response. Personally, I don't see that box being worth over $600 used. My SMS-1 does a great job doing a total room response. I had to find proper sub positions first, then ran SMS-1. You can also try Anti-mode 8033, apparently it's very similar to SMS-1.

And of course, as you already found out, no receiver will do a proper sub response equalization, unless it's XT32 equipped.
