Hermit, this isn't a elite SC series model, just a special one for a local retailer, still has the D3 amps in it and such but unlike the SC-XX it's missing some stuff to hit a price point. But it's not mine yet, gotta go about getting it first then the "fun" begins...

Could be an interesting few days at first getting a handle on it.

Same as the 72 down there eh, worthwhile as I can snatch it for $720 up here or is it going to be a paperweight in a year or two ?

Why would it be a paper weight ? You have all the processing, inputs/outputs galore, ice amps built in, I think your covered for at least 5 years. Who knows....they may come out with another surround format, green ray players, a new connection other than HDMI, and all your gear will once again become obsolete starting the buying process all over again.

That's a good price for what you get in that receiver, enjoy it.

On another note, please make sure when you set it up and your using the auto calibration to put the mic at ear level in your listening position. If you have to stack books on the couch, whatever, has to be at ear level. The house has to be quiet as a church mouse too and you can't be moving around the room either as it calibrates. That's very important in the set up process. Then when it's done you can set-up all the various inputs you'll have stuff connected to. Doesn't take long, but needs to be done. Have fun.

eh I' not the brightest when it comes to some electronics purchases is all, hence the reason of not wanting instant paperweight.

In any event. When I get it home it'll be strictly 2 channel for a bit as I get used to operating it. When I hook other stuff to it I'll give MCACC a shot to see what it does, but as others have mentioned, fiddle further manually. And oh yes thanks to the girlfriend being a T3i owner I have access to a few tripods, easier than stacking crap!

Sidenote, will be interesting to see what the 3490 will make the old M5s sound like :)

Dude, even for 2 channel, you still have to set it up and set-up the inputs your source is connected to. Otherwise it will sound like crap. The receiver has to know how many speakers, the distances, large or small, do you have a subwoofer, etc. When you plug your cdp into it for example, on a digital input, you need to tell the receiver how you want it to process that signal assigned to that input.

It's home...and it's a freakin BEAST ! just plugged it in as it's an open box unit, I've done a reset to bring it back to factory settings. Next, hook up the A3s to it and the CDP (analog tony...not digital) and let it go for a bit to fiddle with crap, see what it's all about before she displaces the 3490...

Just installed AVNavigator onto the Mac Mini, now to find a network cable and well, do the point n click thing to set up, the software seems to want to connect to the receiver over the network for basic configuration. This could simplify things quite nicely...I think...maybe...who knows.

Going from a somewhat barrer rear panel to this thing, HOLY CRAP! (This may or may not be a good HOLY CRAP moment)

er barrer should of read barren up there...

...and I'll be honest...not liking the pre-amp section here, sounds like a step backwards in SQ. MCACC full auto correctly identified that there's only Left and Right, no surrounds of any sort. So she's locked outputting in stereo with tone controls but the sound sounds a bit empty compared to the HK, will fiddle a bit more see if I can warm it up a notch or two...

Am I too picky here ? Seriously, as I type this the thoughts of reinstalling the 3490 into the chain are terrifying...the clusterbleep returning. In any event, got a new list of receivers to check out now...

Anthem MRX 300 for $500 (Does anyone know the bass/treble boost/cut paramters on this one, I've seen AVRs that go +/-6Db or +/-10Db)
NAD T748 $600 (This one actually sounded good directly driving a pair of TSi 500s)
    Yamaha RX-V1075 $800
Marantz SR5008 is still a contender at $744
Last but not least a Marantz NR1604...

I'm so lost with these AVRs...why the hell can't someone make a 2 channel receiver with preouts and HDMI inputs...lol

It really isn't that hard if you take the time to read the manual and follow it step by step. It is time consuming, but once done you will be very happy.

You are looking for easy for HT, but it no longer exists. So either buckle down and start reading or just stick with 2 channels.

cfrizz...it wasn't a matter of not understanding how to use it, it was the actual sound quality out of it vis a vie using the HK3490 as a preamp, the warmth and dynamic range suffered and I did every conceivable option and setting including a manual system reset and going bare bones with analog CD as the source obliterating whatever MCACC did. And this was in pure 2 channel mode, no surround effects whatsoever.

If it helps, I had the manual open in a PDF on my MacBook beside me at all times and going through it like there was no tomorrow. And staying up all night to watch a gold medal hockey game made me work with it and figure it out. I loved the flexibility of it, but the actual SQ, turned me off.

In other words, operationally, fantastic. Sonically to my ears, not so much.

True, might take a few to hit on the SQ aspect to me, but until then the HK3490 is back in it's place making the system hit me in the chest :)

That's part of your problem. The Pure Audio mode just outputs what is coming in. You have no control over the treble and bass. It doesn't use the dynamic EQ's that MACC or Audyssey sets up. It bypasses everything in the AVR and outputs it exactly how it sounds coming in.

What exactly is "wrong" with the sound quality? I have a hard time believing the preamp sections in the HK and Pio would be that different.

Lack of warmth, verging on shy to be honest and sounding rather "thin". Also some missing detail in the recordings I tend to listen to. Take for instance The Guess Who, The Essential Guess Who, track Dancin' Fool (Remastered). With the HK3490 as the pre, the Marantz spinning the disc and the Parasound doing it's thing if the volume is moderate, you can pick apart nuances that weren't heard when the SC-1328 was heading up the system. Things like that, that made me sit there for hours straight screwing with every available option to bring the warmth and detail back but to no avail.

Please do note, my ears aren't your ears or anyone's ears they are my ears and what they were taking in, didn't agree with them.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a recent Onkyo with a ten foot pole, given all the HDMI board failures they've been having...

I've heard of that, but it can be mitigated, I will be using an external amp for the fronts and I can possibly shoehorn a fan into the unit to keep the HDMI board cool...but the price is like half of regular retail...

Based on your comments about the Pio's preamp section, I don't think you'd be any happier with the Onkyo. There must be something about the HK sound that you like. Why not look around for an AVR3600 or something similar? When you had the Marantz did you enjoy the sound of it?

I have had my TX-NR808 in a tight space with an inch or two of clearance and it has been fine. It gets used every day because it on my main tv. Onkyo has been doing a 1 time out of warrenty repair for people as well. When they repair the unit they put in a new case bottom that has vents and fans.

Eh did some googling, Apparantly the 717 doesn't suffer from nearly as much HDMI board failures as it's other cousins in the line up, same for the 818. Something to do with the larger chassis it's been noted. That said it does sound quite nice on its own so I'm considering it now. The store does have a 14 day return policy so that's enough time to fiddle with it if brought home. Plus it's rather easy to operate with a ton of its features and settings rather accessible from the faceplate with a mass of buttons and controls. I think it's worth a shot considering it's less than half the normal price right now.

Make sure they don't charge an outrageous "restocking fee". I got burned one time, returning something. I told them that I'd go put it back on the shelf for them, so the restocking fee wasn't necessary. I lost that fight. And if I remember correctly, that fee was about 25% of the cost of the item. I hate everyone.

I don't get what your hoping to gain by going another receiver, but since you are, and since you like the HK house sound, the Onkyo baffles me as your choice.

I have the same thoughts as you do Tony...

I think the HK is now endangered, need more inputs, more flexibility over a standard 2 channel receiver. Brought home a shelf display model of the TX-NR717...hooked it up to the amp, the CDP and spun a few discs last night...store has a boxed 717 waiting for my decision...I know the salesguy well. In the brief listening time I've had so far, I like the sound, warm, rich, full and detailed. Will give this particualr 717 a couple of days of torture though...
