Default New avr or pre/pro help needed

After 3 years my harman Kardon 7550 HD has a failing hdmi board :( I have been happy with it up until now, but it has become very glitchy and I'm not too sure how long its going to last. And the glitches are becoming more frequent. My budget is a little tight after buying 2 svs ultra's and this couldn't have come at a worse time. My budget is about a thousand, and I would like 7.2 and feature packed. Must have pre-outs to run my sunfire amp as well. This also leaves me wondering if I should go away from AVR's because I won't be using the amplifier section? I have only owned Harman kardon,so looking to try something new. I want something to pair well with my lsi's and sunfire. Have had my eye on pioneer elite sc65 and onkyo tx-nr828, also have been looking into integra's. Any suggestions is always appreciated!

Have someone replace the fish caps on the board and see if it helps or not not too costly to try.

I went from my AVR7200 based system to the Anthem MRX line and have been very pleased. I wanted to make sure the preamp section was very musical and the ARC is tough to beat for room issues.

I think when it comes to price for features, an AVR is the better choice. It's simply a more competitive market.

If you want an Onkyo, accessories4less has the TX-NR929 for $890. Factory refurb, great price, and has just about every option you will probably need.

rpf, the OP is located in Canada, accessories4less doesn't like to ship refurbs out of the states.

talked to my local "harman kardon service center" and the fish caps or hdmi board are not available and need to be sent to harman kardon for the repair... equals not worth it. damn...

I was thinking the same thing, and I still have the AVR as back up if something happens.

I have seen hdmi cables cause flaky problems, also the pins can become bent, dirty or may have cracked solder at the other side on the board and i second the suggestion to have the fish caps checked, some times just lose ground screws can cause digital demons to become unhappy and attack so i don't know if i would write that avr off yet. I don't know what techs charge in your area but i usually charge about 20 bucks to take it apart and look around

Any service center that tells me the caps are not available is not a place I would take any equipment to be repaired. They are blowing you off you can order the caps from many places sk what they told you is bs. They could be right about the board not being available but if the caps are bad there is no reason they can't be replaced. Go else where.

I second that, caps can be sourced from many places, i would never tell my customers that a cap is not available, there are almost always substitute parts available. I even keep kit boxes of smd caps on hand if only for my own use.

Definitely going to try another shop. This receiver was really expensive back in the day. These guys made it seem as if it was only good for spare parts. I will try h/k directly for more information.
