Tour,
That Coryell disc has some of the best sound on disc in recent memory.(The shimmer of the high hat is as good as it gets IMHO)
More amazing is that they recorded that in three days I believe.

Portishead - Dummy
I've seen several posts regarding Portishead here. Can you tell me a bit about the (style, idiom, genre) of the group. What album would be a good starting point for someone uninitiated?

Dummy would be the album to start with, period.
Vocals, a soft spoken Natalie Merchant meets Suzanne Vega, with a splash of Bjork. The music, a slightly subdued, bass laden trance style, with obvious jazz and funk influences. The recording is nothing short of superb, very polished - but with some very gritty, low-fi sampling (turntables) inserted throughout - but tastefully done.
It's interesting stuff, to say the least.
Cheers,
Russ

Russ gave a very apt description of "Dummy". It will flex your PR's to be sure, and has some nice SDA treats as well...
BMDP,
If you like, I can add "Dummy" to the loaner list...
Dave,
Gave Larry another spin tonite, and paid a little more attention to detail (as in was not on the computer)... very nicely recorded to be sure.
Also spun the Stravinsky - Sciabrin disc while prepearing the evening's repast. Had never heard Gergiev and the Kirov S.O. before... nice...
Tonite mellowed out to a couple Francis Albert disks, "Songs for Swinging Lovers" and "Gold"... doesn't get much better.
Then a little Tony Bennett, "The Art of Excellence"... very nice...
Now playing very low we have:
J.S.Bach, "Sonatas for Flute", Jean-Pierre Rampal/ Trevor Pinnock (Harpsichord)/ Roland Pidoux (Cello)
Nice old, two-disk issue from CBS Masterworks... great Sunday paper stuff, and not too shabby for the wee hours of Friday either...
More later,
Tour...
