Just picked up the new 4 disc King Crimson box set:

21st Century Guide To King Crimson Vol 1 (1969-1974)
the remastering on this set rocks..especially on some of the old
live stuff thats included

here is some info on it for those that are interested:

The aim of The 21st Century Guide To King Crimson is to replace the Frame By Frame 4-CD compilation (1991), taking advantage of technological advances, ten years of additional live and studio Crimsonising, and twelve years of archiving live material. Frame By Frame’s 3 studio + 1 live albums are being replaced by this two-volume 8-CD Guide, a comprehensive overview for new ears of all that is necessary in the Crimson corpus. Old-generation completists might disagree with some choices, but material not included in the Guide is available for new-generation completists, should they wish. The Guide can only exist now that the complete King Crimson recorded work (live and studio) is, for the first time, in one place: DGM; and a place where, arguably also for the first time, it is not being driven to serve the interests of business.

Drawn from seven studio albums & a wealth of archive live performances, ‘The 21st Century Guide to King Crimson’ outlines the history of one of the most enduring & influential British rock groups. Covering the period 1969-1974, the
set consists of 2 CDs of studio & 2 CDs of live material. The studio tracks include material from the seminal debut album ‘In the Court of the Crimson
King’ through to the classic ‘Red’ album. The concert performances feature recordings from just prior to the release of ‘Court of..’ to the next to final concert by the mid seventies lineup in June 1974. All of the music has been digitally remastered, edited & assembled from the best source tapes available. In the case of ‘Court of..’ this is the first time the recently rediscovered original master tapes have been available for CD release. The release is packaged in a fold out book containing the CDs & booklet, housed in an outer slipcase. The booklet features a diary style timeline of the band detailing complete concert listings, recording dates, archive photos, posters, reviews, memorabilia & a new introduction by founder member Robert Fripp.

i gave my quick thoughts at the beginning of the post..remastering is great on it..some of the old live stuff was pretty rough on other compilations but they cleaned it up pretty good
If you are a fan of the band and dont have a lot of the remastered stuff they have released in the last couple years then this is a a great set to get..

Thanks... I think all I have ever heard of theirs is "Court of the Crimson King", which I like quite a bit...

Is their other material comparable?

Just about every album was unique..the first two (Wake Of Poseidin and Crimson King) are pretty similar but then they got into thier Lizard/Islands period and got a little jazzier and and little more wacky....it seems every band lineup change pretty much marked a different direction for the band musically
I dont think I would reccomend this set to someone based on them liking Crimson King alone. The musical direction in the the period between 69-74 changed pretty drastically every few albums

Seems like every gathering I've been to lately someone is spinning one Keb CD or another. Just ordered his self-titled.

Spent Friday evening listening to Hamilton Loomis at a local club, Cactus Moon. The kid is growing up. Voice has gotten stronger. His guitar work is still astounding. And his stage presense is something to behold.

Now has what he calls his "little guitar", which is what it is. It's about a half-scale job that was custom made for him in Austin out of walnut by Chip Todd... just gorgeous.


Spent much of today with my freshly autographed copy of his latest CD, "Kickin' It". Great stuff... his best effort of the three I now own.

He's been expanding his travels yearly. I definitely recommend you look for him in your area....

Probably won't see Ham your way until late spring or summer (although you will hear him much sooner.... I promise). Spending most of the winter in the south... TX, NM, etc. This spring he's booked a a couple weeks in the UK. and is hoping to add some continent dates as well.
He did do some East Coast gigs this past summer, and I think it included one Baltimore area date.

The Flying Burrito Brother's "Farther Along: The Best of..."
Have never really been a fan with my only exposure being their "Last of the Red Hot Burritos", a so-so effort, but many say this group is where country rock began, so this was a WTH buy. And it turns out that I am pleased that I made it.

In addition to some fine, original songs (mostly by co-founders Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman), there are some excellent covers including: "Wild Horses", "Dark End of the Street" and, even the BeeGee's, "To Love Somebody".
