Duran Duran's "Astronaut" SACD. Shockingly good. First album with all 5 original members in 20 years and it really shows.....the band is in top form and I can't believe I am typing this....Simon LeBon actually sounds great on this album. All the songs sound like "singles" material. Highly recommended.

Josh Sklair- "Josh" replaying some disks i've received from or were recommended by folks on the forum.(Thanks Mike, on this one)
This one really comes alive on the Thiels with the Dodd ELP handling preamp duty. This is truly a you are there disk with the right set up.

    Dave,

A friend (who's currently on tour in Europe) has been playing bass with Josh, and a few other crazies, fairly often in LA. As soon as he returns, I'm hoping to score some board tapes of their lounge gigs. Should be fun!

Sounds like it could be! No joke though that disk, i'm guessing the time alignment does it, through the new/old Thiels just gains a new depth/dimension.

Threw on some Jesse Sykes- "Oh my girl" still a multi layered favorite of mine.

Joan Osborne - How Sweet It Is

    Release Date: September 17, 2002
    Label: Compendia
    Catalog No.: 9365

Despite the image most have of Joan Osborne as the "Pop" singer who brought "One of Us" to the airwaves....Her element is a rock/blues/soul genre. "How Sweet It Is" is an album of cover versions from soul artists, including most of her influences (with a couple of "rock" covers thrown in). Marvin Gaye , Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Edwin Starr, Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Dave Mason and The Band are some of the origninal artists. Smooth and laid back is a good description of the style of this album. She doesn't try to copy or sound like the original artist but more like she is giving homage while adding her own voice and interpetation. She is a white girl with a voice made for R&B and Soul. It is well recorded and a good listen.

    Elton John-Honky Chateau (MSFL)

Found this at the used cd store the other day. It's the original MSFL disc. What some people get rid of is amazing sometimes. This recording got a lot play when I was growing up. Amazingly, this is one I haven't had in my collection. Classic Elton John, one of his best IMO.

^^ I'm a fan of Joan as well. She grew up very fast...

"You better get back, Honky Cat, livin' in the city isn't where it's at..."
Played the **** out of that in college...

Me this AM? Paula Cole - This Fire

Used CD shop purchase for "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone". Just threw it in expecting full disk of pleasant, background fluff in the same vein...
    But no-o-o-o-o-o...

In the opening of the first track, "Tiger", she reached out, grabbed me by the balls and said, "Sit down and listen." I still am...

Bit over produced in spots, but the lady has some serious pipes, and more than a little writing talent. AMG says jazz training, and it shows in spots.

Nice to be pleasantly surprised every once in a while...

EDIT:... and again by the same disk... Last track is "I Don't Want to Wait"... Did not even know this was her. Just a cherry on top...

Just listened to Slow Surprises by Emmylou Harris on my "75 Years of Grand Ole Opry" CD. Great song. Her voice and the music really work together to create a performance.

Am listening through my Chris Isaak Heart Shaped World CD again. I like every song on this CD! Best money I've ever spent! Well, I didn't actually buy it myself, but it would have been had I bought it!

    Cream - Goodbye
On R2R, snagged NIB with cellophane

The studio cuts are super. The live stuff would require an illegal smile to really enjoy. I haven't listened to this album in years. I suspect the next listen will fall in that same time frame.

Was looking through my cassettes, so I'm listening to Bruce Hornsby and the Range - The Way It Is. Listening on my portably tape player on my headphones...*dreams of a 'nice' headphone rig*...

    Thumbs up

Ike & Tina Turner - Outta Season
1969 Blue Thumb, Reel to Reel
Ike Turner is a fantastic blues guitarist, and this offering showcases his talents in the genre better than any in my collection. Nothing original to be found here in the way of songwriting -- these are all covers of blues and soul standards. But, there are amazing covers of "Five Long Years", "Rock Me Baby", "Reconsider Baby", and "3 O'Clock in the Morning Blues". Tina does a respectable job with the (predominantly) blues cuts and lets it all hang out on "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "I Am a Motherless Child". There's a subtle call and return between the couple on "Grumbling" that I never knew was there until I heard it in true analog.

    Peter Gabriel - So

I just love this album. Not a bad cut from top to bottom. You want to give your sub or those passive radiators a workout? The bass on this album will do that. Kate Bush on "Don't Give Up" is a plus.

Loggins & Messina - The Best of Friends
    1976 - CBS 1R1 6594, Reel to Reel

One of my personal favorites from the 70's. Solid songwriting, vocals and arrangements throughout. Michael Omartain's work on the keys is simply outstanding, as is Jim Messina's guitar and mandolin play. Angry Eyes, Vahevala, Peace of Mind, My Music, House at Pooh Corner, Watching the River Run, Danny's Song, Your Mama Don't Dance -- an amazing album!
