I'll second the new Mark Knopfler, Privateering. I've found that it keeps getting better and better and better. I saw him open for Dylan twice last week and he played four songs off the new album each night. It seems when you see songs performed live, often your appreciation is heightened. I've been listening to the album quite a lot since and its quite an album.

There were a couple moments when he was playing the Gibson Les Paul where he let loose. For some reason, not so much when he played the Stratocaster or other guitars. The first night it seemed he played shorter solos but maybe that was just me. His playing in general is more subdued but much more subtle than when he was with Dire Straits. But then, his music is much more celtic or roots in general now, although he does have some rockers and fast blues in his new stuff too. I'm a big Dylan nut, but I actually preferred Knopfler over Dylan at both shows. Knopfler played a full 75 minute opener, too, which was nice. At one point in the first show, people were yelling out Dire Straits song titles, and he said, "We're not gonna play any of that stuff." They ended each show with "So far away," however. He also plays "Brothers In Arms" occasionally. I've had chances to see him before and passed, I won't do that again. Every person in his band is absolutely talented, and Mark is a master in every sense of the word. He played with Dylan on four songs each night, and several times Dylan shot a look over after some lick, like "Wow, that was something!" Very few people get asked to play with Dylan, and I have never seen Dylan exhibit such admiration. Of course, Dylan never introduced him, but that's Dylan. (I guess he did at one show in Omaha or somewhere.) I can't wait for Mark's next tour.
