Return to Forever-"Romantic Warrior" CRS's (all SDA speakers for that matter) were definitely made with vinyl in mind. LP's just have so much more to offer in conjunction with the SDA experience. Augmenting the channel seperation is one aspect but i've noticed the dimensional improvement through them as well.
Lonnie Brooks Band - Turn On The Night
1981, Alligator - AL 4721, LP
25-year old, unopened vinyl (until this morning). This is like opening a bottle of vintage wine. You never know just what you might find -- vinegar or perfection. In this case, near perfection from Lonnie and a backing group of nearly all white musicians from Alligator's stable at the time. I say "near perfection" because the cover of "T.V. Mama" sounds like someone singing the lyrics over the top of "Sweet Home Chicago". Solid offering nonetheless.

You got it, Dave. The SDAs were voiced for analog, and nothing makes them shine quite so well. My big SDA rig (SDA SRS with nearly same vintage amp/preamp combo from Carver Research) is exclusively analog now, with TT, R2R, and cassette deck as sources. It completely draws you into the music.Originally Posted by DAGLJAM6

James Wheeler - Ready
Delmark 719, CD
I bought this CD from James during a break at a gig he was playing at Belushi's old club -- Chicago B.L.U.E.S. -- in 1998. It still floors me each time it's played. It has the authentic blues feel James gives up in person captured. A Chicago favorite, Kenny Saydak, on keys rolls out one solid performance after another with Billy Flynn cooking in the second guitar spot.
It's been far too long since I visited the blues triangle at Lincoln and Halstead in Chicago. I hope James is still kickin' out the blues at one of the great clubs in the area.

Who'd a thunk it....Bennie Goodman-"Swing into Spring" great vinyl comp of 40--50's Goodman. Interesting to note the title track recorded in '58 has Doc Severinson on it, kinda cool trivia.
The only time i was in chicago a coupla years back it was 19 below and not a single medium to big name was playing in town. I'd love to go back though catch some blues at Buddy's place and hit this great Italian Restaurant (can't remember the name at the moment) a few blocks from the motel I was staying in. Great place to visit.Originally Posted by BlueMDPicker
When you're in Chicago, forget the big names. Take a cab to Lincoln and Halstead and catch the local talent at Kingston Mines, Lilly's, and Chicago B.L.U.E.S. (all within a block of each other - well, I hope they're still there.) Great players, like Hip Linkchain and Dion Payton, can be found there regularly.Originally Posted by DAGLJAM6

Luther Allison-Live In Chicago Alligator-4869 c1999
Perhaps one of the most overlooked Chicago blues players around. He played with & grew up around (teenage years) many of the great Chicago blues players like; Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Freddie King, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, and Otis Rush. What he did so successfully is take his base of Chicago blues and add touches of rock, soul, reggae, funk, and jazz.
Well into his mid-50s, Allison continued to delight club and festival audiences around the world with his lengthy, sweat-drenched, high-energy shows, complete with dazzling guitar playing and inspired, soulful vocals. He continued to tour and record until July of 1997, when he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Just over a month later, he died in a hospital in Madison, WI.
Live In Chicago is pulled from performances at the Chicago Blues Festival, Buddy Guy's Legends club with a couple of strays recorded in Lincoln, NE, that were too good not to include, this two-disc set captures Allison at the absolute peak of his powers. Disc one is the Chicago Blues Festival in its entirety with a bonus track of Luther jamming on the finale with Otis Rush and Eddie C. Campbell on a medley of two B.B. King tunes. Disc two is equally potent, a combination of performances pulled from Buddy Guy's Legends club and the Zoo Bar in Lincoln, NE. Luther simply played his heart and spirit out right to the end and these recordings spotlight it in a very fine manner. One of the label's best.
This is desert island cd for me. Simply a must have for blues fans.

Jimi Hendrix-Live at Clark University
Dagger records
This is a release from from Dagger records which is an official label of Experience Hendrix, LLC. They release official bootlegs which have been hand picked and approved by the Hendrix estate. This is one such recording.
Recorded 3-15-68, Atwood Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts. A great recording very alive and dynamic, and an equally impressive short performance. This is about the time the Experience is at their peak. Mitchell is amazing. This performance sounds so fresh, like they were actually enjoying themselves. Some of the later Hendrix shows can sound a bit uninspired. Hendrix is on fire here.
